“Says the Magic Eight Ball.” She chuffs. “So, what’s your news?”
“Wellll … I surfed this morning.”
“What? You surfed! Kah! That’s amazing.”
“It was incandescent, transcendent, magnificent …” I gush.
“Okay, Miss Thesaurus. Tell me everything. What finally pushed you into taking that leap? This is huge. I know it. You know it.”
“It is.”
I spend the rest of the walk home filling Leilani in on every detail of the morning.
“Bodhi’s manning up these days, huh?”
“He’s being consistent. And he’s still irresistible.”
“I’m not convinced yet. But I’m leaving the judgment call up to you. I can tell you’re in a way better headspace.”
“I am.”
I fill Leilani in on Megan showing up when we rode in to shore.
“She wants to do an interview.”
“What do you think? Are you game? Do you need to wait?”
“I think I’m going to do it. When Bodhi dropped off the face of the earth, that was news. All those reporters came around for a while. I refused to comment back then.”
“I know. I remember it all.”
“Yeah. But now, this is my story. It’s not about him. It’s about me coming back from what happened at Mavericks. I want to be the one to tell my story, and I trust Megan to tell it the way I want.”
“Then, do it.”
“I’m going to.”
“Good. I can’t wait to see the clip on YouTube.”
“YouTube?”
“Yeah. They film the interviews forSurfernow. It reaches more people. So, I’m assuming she’ll have someone there filming while she takes notes for the physical article.”
“Oh. Okay.”
“It’ll be great, Kah. I always knew you were a phoenix. Nothing’s gonna keep my girl down.”
“It feels that way.”
“I can’t wait to see you. I’ll text you all the details.”
“I can’t wait either.”
I wonder if Bodhi will come.
Leilani and I hang up and I walk into the house.
Bodhi’s dressed from his shower, and singing a song in the kitchen. As I approach, I realize he’s serenading Shaka, who is sitting at his feet looking up at him with hearts in his eyes. He’s switching up the lyrics toSummer of Loveby Shawn Mendes.
