My hands wrap around his back as I pull at the back of his shirt, trying to get closer to him. Needing to be closer to him.
The clearing of a throat brings me back to myself. We both pull away, but I can't turn around. There's no way I can face whoever is standing behind me. Part of me is hoping that it's the lady who let me in before but it doesn't look like I'll be so lucky when Silas looks over my shoulder and grins.
"Hey, Son. How are you tonight?"
Feeling even more embarrassed, I bury my head into Silas while they greet each other. "I'm good. Sorry to interrupt, but I can only stay for so long. I have to train early tomorrow."
"No problem." Silas looks down at his watch. "The food should be ready in five minutes. Let's go to the dining room."
Smith's footsteps fade when I dare to look up at Silas. "That was embarrassing."
Silas shakes his head, then leans down and gives me a chaste kiss. "There's nothing to be embarrassed by, little doe. Now let's go eat."
He leads me into the dining room by the hand, where Smith is sitting down. He's looking down at his phone and doesn't look up as we walk in, but his brows crease together as he looks at whatever is on his phone. I can't stop myself and the words are out before Silas can say anything. "Is everything okay?" I ask as I pull out a chair.
Smith looks up immediately from his phone and his eyes go wide when he sees me. Just as quickly they narrow. His lips turn upward when he snarls, "Uhh…What are you doing here Kimberly?"
Silas speaks first, his tone as cold as ice. "She is with me, Son."
One of Smith's brows raise as he looks up at his dad. "You going after my leftovers, Dad?" Then he turns back to me, spewing more hate. "Fuck Kimberly, you couldn't have me, so you went after my dad? I knew you were a fucking gold digger."
My jaw drops at what is coming out of his mouth. When my brain catches up, I go to respond, but Silas beats me to it. "Stop it Smith. You will not talk about her like that."
The two men stare each other down, neither one of them wanting to break the tension. Shit, this going worse than I thought. I knew this was going to go badly, deep in my gut I knew he would be mad, but this seems more. He's furious. I need to stop this, I won't be the one who comes between them.
Pressing my hands on the table, I stand up. "Listen Smith. What is your real problem with me?"
He looks at the both of us, his face full of disgust. "He's too fucking old for you. It's disgusting. You're not my mom. He won't love you, you're just a piece of ass to him."
Ignoring the fact that he just called me a piece of ass, I recognize what he said. He's just a little boy lashing out because he doesn't want to see his dad with anyone else. Silas' eyes soften as he looks at his son, now leaning back in his chair, his phone discarded to the side, arms crossed over his chest. "Smith, we talked about me dating again."
"Yeah, but that's when I thought you were going to find someone who was your age. You know, for companionship."
"Kimberly is who I'm choosing."
Smith gets up from the table, snatching his phone. "Well, I don't want to be here for this."
Damn it! "Stop it, Smith." The tone of my voice has him pausing at the threshold. "I won't come between you two. If you really don't want me to be with your dad, I won't. I'll leave right now. But I want you to know I'm not here for his money. He could be completely broke and I would still love your father."
Before Smith can respond, Silas turns toward me, his eyes unreadable when his hands intertwine with mine. "You love me?"
"Yes, I love you." I push him back because I can tell that he's about to kiss me and I can't let that happen until we get this straightened out. Sharpening my tone so he knows I'm serious. "But like I said, I won't come between you and your son."
My gaze turns back to Smith, his eyes bouncing between us. He lets out a breath along with a sigh. "Do you love her, Dad?"
Silas looks over at his son, then he moves back to me. "Yes. I love her."
"Fine. I won't come between you two." Then his eyes move back to me. "And this won't affect my relationship with my dad. But I need time to process. I'll call you from Texas." With those words, he leaves the house.
Chapter 14
Silas
"Well, that went smoothly," I say sarcastically as I turn back to Kimberly.
Her eyes so full of compassion when she looks at me. "I'm sorry that he didn't take it well," she says, trying to comfort me even though I should be the one comforting her. Grabbing her by the waist, I pull her into me. "Don't worry, he'll come around, " I whisper against the shell of her ear.
My hands run up and down her back. She shivers under my touch, as she mutters under her breath, "I don't know Silas. Maybe this is too much for him?"
