At that moment Kendra stepped out of the main house and turned to the woods, her beta leisurely leaning against the door frame of her home. A man guarded by two wolves stepped out of the woods, buttoning up his shirt.
“Must be Alpha Finlay,” Ryker guessed as he watched Kendra step closer and greet the young alpha.
“I believe so too.”
Ryker scanned the rest of the village and saw one of the women freeze. He nodded towards her so Gabriel would notice her too. “The girl Kent knocked up.”
“This might not be as boring as I thought it would be.”
“Fuck, I wish it was. Maybe a little drama will pull the attention away from us.”
They watched as the other packs arrived one by one. The Dagger Wolves had sent their alpha heir, Rowan, while the Night Stars’ alpha had come alone. Kendra seemed to be getting along well with everyone, but with Rowan in particular. He pulled her into a tight hug when he arrived, laughing with her all the way to his guest house.
Gabriel must have felt his jealousy turn into rage because he laid a hand on Ryker’s shoulder. “I believe their fathers have always been close.”
He wanted to curse the world out but knew everyone was watching them–Alpha Vallerian in particular. He’d been hiding upstairs in the bedroom with Luna Sophia. She wasn’t far along in her pregnancy, but Alpha Vallerian was even more protective of her than before. It wasn’t common knowledge and was to be kept that way.
‘We’re here,’ Darron linked him and Gabriel both.
‘Any patrols?’ Gabriel asked.
‘No, but we haven’t come too close yet.’
‘Good.’
Devon and two others had followed them to the territory but hadn’t travelled with them. They were supposed to be back up as Alpha Vallerian wanted a plan B in case something were to happen.
The evening was spent together with his warriors in the second house, cooking and eating. It wasn’t much different from their evenings in the Nest but with Kendra so damn close, he found it even harder to enjoy himself.
Chapter Seventeen
“Do you think they’ll even come out of their nest?” Avery asked. He leaned against the window, staring towards the houses they’d offered the Blood Wolves.
“I don’t think so.”
“What should we do with the Blood Wolves near our borders?”
“Why do you think they are here?”
Avery shrugged his shoulders.
“And here I thought you were a man of details.”
“I don’t understand.”
“They are here to protect their luna and soon to be heir.”
He turned his head back to her, his eyebrows fused. “How do you know?”
“Her heartbeat has an echo just like Lina and Jenevea’s had. Them barricading themselves in their houses with ten warriors only makes it more obvious.”
“Why did he bring her then?”
“He would never leave his mate, especially when she’s pregnant.”
“Then why the fuck would he come at all?”
To punish me, she thought to herself. Instead of voicing her thoughts, she looked Avery straight in his eyes. “Do you trust me?”
