Jenevea nodded.

“This is a very personal question, but I have to ask it and you have to answer honestly.”

Another nod.

“Are you sure?”

“He’s the only man I’ve been with,” she whispered, shame and guilt weaving in her voice in a way that gave Kendra goosebumps.

“I understand that you’ve had a long journey. My luna will make sure you get some food and rest. You are welcome to stay with us. You have to understand that this is no easy situation and I’ll have to think about how we’ll proceed. One thing I will promise you, is that I won’t put you on the streets. You have a home with us for as long as you need.”

Kendra could see the weight being lifted of Jenevea’s shoulders. “Thank you, Alpha Desmond.”

A moment later the office door opened, and Kendra’s mom stepped in. “This way, love. Let’s get you something to eat and some fresh clothes to wear.”

Jenevea followed Kendra’s mom out and the room filled with an overwhelming silence. Her father took a deep breath, his eyes moving from her and Kent before they rested on her again.

“I believe you have something special to share with us, my child.”

Kendra squared her shoulders, puffing her chest out. “Isis has blessed me with a wolf.” She couldn’t help but say it proudly, the weight of the secret instantly falling from her shoulders.

“When?”

“The last celebration. I wasn’t feeling well, so I walked away from the pack and that’s when I shifted in the woods.”

Her father’s eyes turned sad. “You had no one to guide you.”

“No. When I shifted, my wolf was in control and I didn’t know how to get it back. I ran until I fell unconscious and when I awoke, I’d re-gained control.”

“But you have clearly learned to control her.”

“Yes, when I returned, I wasn’t sure what to do. I wasn’t sure how anyone would react–especially you. I asked Mike if he could help me learn to control her so when I did reveal her, we’d both be ready.”

“Were you afraid I would send you away?”

“I’m not sure what I was afraid of. I already stand out, and I was worried this would be too much.”

Her father nodded and turned his attention to her brother. “Now you. I would be lying if I said I wasn’t disappointed. You acted selfishly today, with no regards to the soul seeking your help nor the child she is carrying. A child that could very well be yours. I believe what she’s said, and I have no doubt in her story.”

Kent’s face was stone cold, his eyes full of hatred.

Her father sighed, his face suddenly darkening with fatigue. “Let me be honest with all of you: I’m not sure how to proceed.”

“Maybe we should all just get some rest,” Avery suggested.

“I believe that is a wise choice. We’ll meet again tomorrow morning and discuss this issue further. I understand that tonight’s events may have already spread but I ask everyone here not to discuss anything outside of this room.”

Kendra nodded and even Kent gave a faint sign of agreement.

Her father gestured for them to leave, and Kendra quickly turned around and walked out of the office. She found her mother and Jenevea in the kitchen while Kent stormed upstairs to his room.

“Kendra, do you mind sharing a room with Jenevea tonight?”

“No, but I can take the couch to make it less awkward.”

“There’s no need,” Jenevea whispered, her eyes red and swollen.

“I don’t mind as long as you don’t mind the mess. Let me get you a towel and some pyjamas so you can take a long hot shower before getting some rest.”
