“He helped you pick them out? Just for me?” Jenny felt breathless, unsure if it was because of how hard Eva was squeezing her or because of the thought. Maybe a little of both.
“He did. And if you want, I can tell you which one was his favorite. Or just let you go with what you like the best. Your choice. I’m letting you go now.”
She took a deep breath as Eva let her go. “Roman had a favorite?”
“He did. Do you want to know? Or want to guess?”
Jenny looked at the dresses. “Let me try these on first and see if there’s one I love. Then I want to know.”
“I like that. Let’s start with this one.” Eva pulled out a royal blue dress that was strapless with a mermaid bottom.
“How do we know these are the right sizes?” Jenny asked.
“Roman eyeballed your size. Did a pretty good job, by the looks of it. I can make any small adjustments or alterations needed.”
“Oh,” Jenny said, feeling her cheeks flush. The idea of Roman looking at her body closely enough to guess her size made her feel both flattered and embarrassed.
“He’s not a perv or anything. His family’s loaded. They use tailors and people like me all the time. It’s just something he knows. Don’t sweat it. Shoo—try the dress on!”
Jenny tried on the blue dress, then a black gown with lace around the shoulders, a deep purple one with an empire waist, an emerald green dress with beading, and a silvery-blue gown that looked like a fairytale ball gown. Eva fussed over each one, pulling at parts that would need adjusting and smoothing bits here and there. Jenny felt awkward at first with Eva’s hands on her body, but quickly got used to it.
“They all look amazing,” Eva said. “Do you have a favorite yet?”
She stood with Jenny next to the full-length mirror in the master bedroom. Jenny still had on the silvery-blue ball gown, admiring the full skirt with the hidden pockets. It was a little more formal with a fitted top and a large skirt, the kind of dress she imagined for royalty.
“Do you?” Jenny asked.
Eva put a finger to her lips. “It’s tough! You look amazing in all of them. For some reason, though, I like this one. It makes me think of Cinderella. You need your hair swept up though to show off your neck.” Eva twisted Jenny’s hair up and held it in place. “Yes—perfect.”
“This is my favorite too! I feel so…elegant. But then it has pockets hidden in the skirt. I just love that.”
Eva ran her hands along the waist of the gown. “Turn for me. Hm—I’m not sure we even need to do any adjustments to this. What about the sleeves? I could make it strapless?”
The front of the dress went straight across the chest with soft cap sleeves that hung gently over her arms so Jenny could still move. “No, I think that I’d be fussing with a strapless all night.”
“We can’t have you yanking on your dress. You’ll probably need a strapless bra with this one though. And it dips lower in the back. Can you see?”
Eva spun Jenny around so she could look at the back of the dress. It wasn’t terribly low, but not like anything she’d worn before. She felt self-conscious looking at the back.
“Are you sure this is…” Jenny didn’t know what she even wanted to ask.
“You look gorgeous,” Eva said. “Stop worrying. So, this is the one? Let’s look through the shoes I have. We didn’t have sizes for this, so just give me an idea. Unless they happen to fit.”
Jenny carefully undressed and brought the gown back to Eva, who had a selection of heels on the rug. Eva took the dress and carefully smoothed it into the garment bag.
“You never told me which is Roman’s favorite,” Jenny said.
“Do you want to know?” Eva grinned wickedly.
Jenny considered. “I don’t really want to change my choice now, but I might be tempted if it’s a different dress.”
Eva beamed. “This was Roman’s choice too.”
Jenny took a last look as Eva began zipping the garment bag. “Good,” she said. “I like that we’ll match.”
“Match?” Eva furrowed her eyebrows. “What do you mean? Did he tell you what he’s wearing? I don’t even know yet.”
“I don’t know what he’s wearing. But this dress is the color of Roman’s eyes.”
