Page 58 of Wait For Me

“I’m out,” I told Breakneck as I got up to leave. I didn’t even wait around to see if he was able to convince Maggie. That chick was skittish as fuck around some of the guys, and if I hadn’t seen her working one over during a party, I’d swear she was a virgin.

No one followed me, which was a good thing, since I figured Tripp and Mack might both want to take a swing at me for what Breakneck inadvertently insinuated. That fucking idiot. Instead, I made it to my bike and headed out. There were things I needed to check in on at my house anyway after a quick visit with my mom.

By the time I got finished with the chores my mom needed done around her place, I was fucking beat. That didn’t stop me from noticing a certain Beast of a car parked out front of a house that had been on the market for a while. It sat right at the midpoint between my mom’s house and mine, about three miles between on each side.

Star kicked the front tire and then paced up and down the little walking path that went from the mailbox to the front door. There wasn’t a driveway or garage on this house like most of the others. It was a little cottage style place. I pulled my bike over and hopped off while she stared at me.

“Hey, Twinkles! What are you doing out here all by your lonesome?”

“Ugh, Beast decided to fuck off today. I think it might be a dead alternator or something. Damn thing just keeps clicking and won’t turn over. Should have known too because the lights have dimmed and flickered the past couple days, and the S-Belt’s been making a hell of a noise. I have a damn appointment scheduled to have it looked at, but of course, that’s for tomorrow.”

It shouldn’t shock me that the woman sounded like she knew exactly what she was talking about. Star had been self-sufficient for years and managed to keep her geriatric car running without the help of the men in her life – at least I don’t think she had help. Fuck, I didn’t really know. That was one of the topics we skirted around when she talked about her travels. She never brought up exes or significant others she had while she was away, even though I’d seen evidence that there had been at least one other man in her life after the married asshole.

“What were you doing here in the first place?”

She pointed over her shoulder at the little cottage house. “I was here with the realtor looking at this place.”

“Why?”

“Because I need my own space where I don’t have to listen to my aunt and uncle fucking all the time. I’m super happy for them, especially since they’re mostly celebrating her being healthy enough to do things again, but seriously, I have more than reached my limit for what I wanted to know about my uncle’s kinks and the way my aunt responds.”

I couldn’t help the laughter that escaped me. And that bastard gave me a squirrely look when Breakneck said we were talking about anal. I tried to shake the laughter off, but it wasn’t working, especially when I looked up at Star and she looked horrified.

“It’s not funny. You don’t even know.”

“I think everyone at the clubhouse has seen Mack and Viv get it on at some point.”

Her jaw dropped. “Are you serious?”

“Yeah, Twinkles. They like to get frisky when the feeling strikes, doesn’t matter who is around when that happens.”

“Ugh! See, I didn’t need to know that.” She glared at me then. “You know I hate when you call me that.”

“Twinkles?”

“Yeah, asshole,” she huffed.

“But that’s what stars do,” I teased. She growled. Legit, growled at me in frustration.

“So, why were you looking into this place? No offense, but you have money, Star. Why are you scouting the tiniest house you could possibly find?”

She shrugged and turned back to the house with a little scrunch of her nose that made it obvious how she felt about it. “I don’t need much room for just me.”

“So, you don’t plan to have a family one day?”

“I figured if I ever need to upgrade I can just rent this place out to someone.” She turned and directed all her attention back to me. “Listen, the realtor left me here to deal with my car on my own because she had another appointment.”

“That was cold. She could have at least waited for you to get a tow and offered you a ride.”

“I know, right? That’s why I can’t buy this place now. I’ll be damned if she gets a dime of commission for something I purchase. She thought I was poor because I showed up in an older car, wearing ripped jeans, and looking at a tiny little cottage. That twat. I have half a mind to go buy the biggest, most expensive property in this town, give the commission to her competition, and tell her to suck it!” Star grabbed at her non-existent dick as she said the last part and I couldn’t help laughing once again at the feisty, beautiful woman in front of me.

“It’s really not funny. I tried calling everyone. My dad, Uncle Mack, Kip. No one answered and the tow truck was out on a long run, so they aren’t available until later.”

“I was just headed back to my place. You want to hop on, and we’ll make some calls from there to get you a tow quicker, so you don’t have to worry about the Beast sitting outside of a for sale property that people are coming and going from?”

“Yeah, that would be great, thanks.”

“No problem, but Twinkles, I noticed I wasn’t on the list of people you called for help.”
