Chapter 30

Elling left The FireRing after talking with Peer. Lizzy looked across the room and lifted her shoulders in question to Coco. He hadn't stopped and spoken to her friend. There wasn't even a glance exchanged between the two.

Coco shook her head and shrugged back. Neither one of them seemed upset by the distance which seemed odd to Lizzy. It would drive her nuts if Roar came in and completely ignored her.

Or semi-ignored her.

Or barely ignored her.

She longed for him. After their trip to Seattle, she missed being with him every minute.

Peer texted on the phone, something he usually refrained from doing while he as working. Lizzy wiped the table down and rearranged the condiments. Granted, it was Wednesday, and the bar was only half full, it wasn't like he was taking his attention away from filling a customer's order.

She carried the rag behind the counter and dropped it in the dirty laundry tub. There was a weird feeling going around tonight, and it wasn't only the bikers who were acting strangely. They'd had a customer who had tried to leave without paying, and the grill in the kitchen quit working. Luckily the man was slow because of his inebriation, and they'd called him a cab, and Elling had discovered the pilot had gone out in the kitchen and relit it.

Heather passed her, ripping a piece of paper off her menu pad. As soon as she was done hanging the order, she said, "Is there a full moon tonight?"

"That's funny. I was wondering the same thing." She picked up the empty trays and restacked them in a pile. "I keep waiting for something else to happen."

"Thank goodness we only have a half hour left to work." Heather tucked her pad into her apron pocket. "I'm ready to call it a day."

"No kidding," she murmured.

Finding herself watching the clock for the remaining thirty minutes, she breathed a sigh of relief when Roar came into the bar ready to walk her and Coco home. The minute they were outside, she latched on to his hand.

He slipped his fingers away from her and instead pressed his hand against her lower back. "Not now."

Confused, she hurried to keep up with him as they crossed the street. "What's going on?"

"Slag business." He gazed around her front yard. "I want you to go inside and stay there."

"Are you expecting trouble?" She moved out of the way so Coco could go inside.

"Ja." He kissed her forehead. "I'll come to you when it's over."

Hating that part of his life where he worried and literally put himself in danger to protect his club, she said, "Be careful."

"Lock the door." He stepped away and waited for her to do what he asked.

Knowing it was useless to try and get him to talk when he was preoccupied, she went inside and locked herself in. Stepping over to the window, she peeked outside and found him jogging across the street back to the bar.

Two bikers met him on the sidewalk. He pointed in two directions, and his MC brothers walked away from him before Roar went into The Fire Ring.

She let the curtain fall closed and turned to Coco. "Did you happen to hear what was going on while we were at work?"

"Nope." Coco pulled off her shoes. "I didn't talk to Elling at all in the last two days."

"Are you fighting?"

Coco yawned. "I wish we were, at least I would know what is going on. He just hasn't made any contact—which isn't unusual. We're not dating, so I don't have a reason to get snoopy on him. But tonight was strange. He normally says hi and remains friendly. Having him completely ignore me is insulting."

"Maybe he didn't mean it to be that way."

"Eh." Coco yawned again. "It's probably just me being overly sensitive. It's late. I'm tired."

While that kind of friendship wasn't something she could handle, Lizzy understood how Coco was fine with being friends with benefits.

"I'm going up to take a shower and go to bed. Maybe we'll find out what is going on tomorrow." She carried her purse upstairs.
