Chapter Sixteen
Jasper
“Hey, Claire, how are you?” I ask as I walk into the barn at Kensington Farm.
She smiles and sets the brush in her hand on the shelf. “I heard you were coming today. I’m doing great.” She surprises me when she wraps her arms around me, stepping back, smiling. “How are you?”
“I’m great.” I turn to Lady. “How is this girl doing?” Rubbing her muzzle, she leans into me.
She feeds the horse a carrot. “Lady is doing great, except for this rash she’s got on her flank.”
I grab my gloves while she brings Lady out of her stall. Moving toward the horse, I see she’s got hives all over her flank. The spots are red and fluid filled. “These are just hives, she more than likely was bitten by something. I’m going to give her a shot of steroids, as well as pills, and give you a tube of cream I want you to use on her twice a day.”
“There will be no lasting effects?” she asks.
I shake my head. “No, the steroids will help dry it up and the lotion will help with the itching. In about a week she’ll be right as rain.”
“Perfect, do what you need to do,” Claire says while I draw up the steroid shot. I quickly inject Lady and then give Claire the oral steroids.
“I’ll need to order the cream, but I’ll have it delivered here, just be on the lookout.”
She nods, and then moves Lady back into her stall. “That sounds great. I appreciate you coming out right away to take a look at her.”
“No worries, those hives won’t hurt her, but after a while the area could certainly become more bothersome for her. In a week, if the area doesn’t appear to be any better, be sure to call me and let me know. She may require a second steroid shot.” I pack up my bag and make my way toward the truck.
“Jasper, wait up.” I turn to find Claire jogging toward me. “You forgot your stethoscope.” She hands it over to me.
“Thanks, this was a gift from Lorelei when I started my practice.”
Her smile is kind. “Well then, good thing I found it.”
I stuff the stethoscope in my medical bag. “So just to recap. I gave you the oral steroids, you can start them tomorrow and the cream should be delivered tomorrow. Seriously, call me if you have any questions.”
She waves and then heads back to the barn, and I head back to the clinic. My partner, Randall, is in one of the exam rooms as I walk by. In my office, I quickly call in the prescription for the cream.
I dictate my visit note, and then send the charge sheet to our billing specialist. My notification goes off and I see it’s the alert that my order for Lady went through. I look at the clock and it’s time to leave to meet Lie for lunch.
I shut down my computer, pop a mint into my mouth, and head outside. Things are amazing with Lorelei since we moved back in with each other. Yeah, things are a little cramped, but it’s only temporary. We haven’t started looking for a new place yet, but hopefully in the next couple of months we will.
Today Lorelei had her IUD taken out, then it will be baby making time. She promised me we were going to have fun with it and not let it stress us out. When it happens, it happens. In other words, there will be lots and lots of sex.
Shit, I should’ve told her to meet me at home. Instead, I head toward Panera and when I reach it, I pull into the lot, parking next to Lorelei’s SUV. I see she’s inside and wave before climbing out.
“Hey, baby,” she says as she rushes toward me, wrapping her arms around me. Grabbing my face, she pulls me down for a kiss. “How was your morning?” She laces her fingers with mine as we head inside.
“Busy, made a couple of house calls. How did your appointment go?”
Her smile lights up her whole face. “Great, basically we can start trying now.” She hugs my hand to her chest. “She said everything looked good down there.”
“That’s great, it’s a little scary now that we’re going to be working on creating another human.”
Lorelei wraps her arms around me while we wait in line to order. “I’m scared too, but I’m also excited.”
I lean in, kissing her lips. “I love you.”
She says it back and then we step up to the counter and order our food.
