Morning

En Route To The Morgue

S omething was on the woman’s mind, but they could tell she wasn’t going to bring it up. Detective Genesis Manning appeared to be thinking about something, but internalizing it as much as possible.

Tori understood that.

She worked with ex-cops and current ones all of the time, and they tended to be thinkers. Now, whether or not she was dwelling on the case, or something else was yet to be seen.

Honestly, she liked the woman. When she’d strolled into the jail last night, letting them out to use the bathroom and eat something, their view of the cops here wasn’t as grim.

This woman was who they had to work with on this, so she’d give her the benefit of the doubt.

It appeared it was time to break the ice.

Tori wasn’t sure if Genesis was wary because of what she’d said about being psychic, or if it was because they’d taken over by making a deal not to sue.

What she was sure about was that if they didn’t make a connection, this would only be more difficult to work. Tori didn’t like making enemies, contrary to popular belief.

That wasn’t how she rolled.

As for this detective, she had a good feeling about her, and Tori always listened to her gut.

There was something there deeper than the badge and kindness.

But what?

That was what she wanted to learn, and the only way to do that was make a connection.

It appeared that she had a side mission today.

Victoria was about to make a friend.

“So, tell us about you,” Tori asked as she sat in the backseat while Bishop rode shotgun beside the detective.

Bishop was the one with a badge, and Tori knew that she was the ‘civilian’ on this one.

From where she sat, Bishop had been equally as curious.

“Yeah, how did you get stuck with Detective Personality?” she asked.

That was all it took.

Genesis laughed.

“Well, apparently, I’m the only one who can handle him. By handle, I mean ignore his blatant misogynistic attitude and clean up after him.”

Well, yeah.

They saw that.

She wasn’t done.

“From what I hear, he wasn’t always like this. You hit the nail on the head. He misses his wife.”

Both women imagined he did.

Genesis glanced up in the mirror at Tori.
