“You made him nervous. I could tell when you brought up his wife that he wasn’t comfortable. No one can generally do that. He’s on a one-way trip to self-destruction land.”
Oh, she imagined that was exactly what happened. She’d like to say he didn’t deserve it, but he did. As for him destroying his life and career, that was his choice. Tori knew if anything happened to Julian, she’d be a mess too.
The cop beside her was still curious.
“So that’s all?” Bishop asked. “Because I’m a cop, and I know that the squeaky wheel gets greased. You know, by an asshole establishment.”
Genesis kept driving. The roads were clear, and she was focused on the day ahead.
And the women.
They seemed like decent people, or that was what her cop gut was saying.
On top of that, she had given her two weeks. After this case was over, she was out of a job. Did it matter all that much if she was open and honest?
Nope.
These were going to be the freest weeks of her cop life. That was for damn sure.
“Let me make this easy for you,” she said. “I’m an only child, and my mother took her life due to mental illness. Supposedly, the voices made her do it.”
They let her talk.
“I was raised by my father, who decided that after years of doing this job, eating his gun was the best option. He was a good cop who raised me to do the right thing. I fell into this, and I actually am good at it—when I’m given a chance to do the job.”
They could see that.
“Jon is a dick, but he’s a consistent dick. I pretty much take my cues from that. I do the OPPOSITE of what he wants me to do. As of late, my boss has been trying to make my life hell. Being a female detective in this town…it’s not easy.”
The radio in the car came to life.
“VICTORIA. DOES. THAT. WITH. HER. RICHARD. HUSBAND. SHE. IGNORES. HIM. TOO.”
Tori was appalled.
Julian was anything but a dick. Granted, she did ignore his directives, but that was because she liked to keep it spicy.
“Trey!” she warned.
Thankfully, the woman didn’t even flinch when they had a full-on conversation with her radio.
That was telling.
“SORRY. BUT. IT’S. TRUE.”
Before Tori could say anything, Genesis had a question. So, she went there.
“Is Richard supposed to be ‘dick’?” she asked. “Because if not, I’m confused.”
The radio answered her.
“YES,” Trey offered.
She shrugged and kept on driving.
That made them both curious.
“Trey, while I know you like to make Julian nervous, he’s not here. So how about for the next day or so, you let me do this with minimum distraction.”
