At that moment, Bodhi was out of that car as quickly as possible. He put space between it and himself.
In his eyes, Hailey saw the fear.
“You have to stop doing that, Jake. It isn’t kind. You know it scares him!”
The dial spun.
“I. AM. WATCHING. OUT. FOR. YOU. HE. SHOULD. TELL. YOU. MORE.”
Her heart raced as she saw Bodhi standing there, watching her, and not saying anything. It was clear that the man wanted to freakout, and the only reason he wasn’t was her.
Bodhi didn’t want to hurt her.
She appreciated that.
“Go in, Bo. I need to talk to my dead husband. I’ll be right there after we have a little chitchat.”
Jesus.
His heart was racing in his chest.
“What if you need me?” he asked. “Maybe I should stay to protect you.”
That was all he had to say.
The door slammed, and Bodhi jumped. That told him all that he needed to know. The dead were not amused with his suggestion.
“Or I’ll just go inside.”
Without another word, he took off.
When Bodhi was safely inside the hotel, Hailey wasn’t having it.
“Jake! What the hell?” she asked.
The dial spun.
“I. DON’T. LIKE. HOW. YOU. ARE. NOT. MARRIED. YET. HURRY. IT. UP.”
She didn’t understand.
“Why are you being like this?” she asked. “Why are you suddenly so miserable and trying to scare him? That’s not going to make him marry me. It’s going to make him run!”
He told her.
“I. ONLY. HAVE. SO. MUCH. TIME. I. AM. STRUGGLING. I. NEED. AN. ANCHOR.”
“Or you could go,” she said. “You crossed, Jake. You didn’t have to come back with me.”
The dial was quiet, and then, it came to life.
“I. NEED. TO. STAY. YOU. WERE. HURT. HE. DID. NOT. PROTECT. YOU. I. WILL. HAVE. TO. DO. IT. FOR. HOLLY.”
Holy shit.
She was fine.
While she understood the need that he felt, she also knew that Bodhi didn’t cause her to get hurt. She followed after him, and had been injured.
