At the car, the detective drove, and Tori was the passenger. It gave her a few minutes to talk to the woman.
About what?
The job.
“It’s going to be good to have you working with us,” Tori said. “I hope you don’t regret leaving this town.”
Genesis actually laughed.
“Have you met my boss and partner? I’d slip into your suitcase and head home with you when you left if I didn’t have a dog and need clean underwear in the future.”
Tori laughed.
“We are dog friendly. Our office has one. It was a dead woman’s dog, and I kept him. Diablo is spicy.”
She was glad they were dog people.
“I have an obsession with big dogs. I hope I can find an apartment that will allow them.”
Tori reassured her.
“We actually have a place that we’ve been using to rent out to our new hires. Hailey is moving her things out soon. She and Bodhi have a house he’s remodeling. You’ll be there. It’s over a witch shop, so behave.”
Genesis laughed.
“Well, what could go wrong with my name when you live over some witches.”
She grinned.
“You never know.”
Genesis was curious.
“Can I ask you something?”
Tori nodded.
“Sure.”
“Will I fit in?” she asked. “I never feel like I do anywhere. I always feel like I’m aimlessly wandering. Maybe it’s when I lost both of my parents, but…”
Tori patted her leg.
“You already fit in. I’m enjoying working with you. It won’t be easy at first. You have to get your license, and believe it or not, the testing is difficult. Since you’re a cop, you’ll be good though. It’s not anything that you can’t already do.”
She hoped so.
“I feel like I need to get out of here. I don’t know why it kicked up, but the second I saw you and your employees, I felt…a pull.”
Tori didn’t know how the universe worked, but she knew things happened for a reason.
“Just go with it. Maybe your soulmate is out there calling to you.”
She laughed.
“I doubt that. I’ve seen too much hurt when it comes to love. I watched my father fall apart when my mother died. Then, I watched me fall apart when my father took his life. I don’t want to ever love. It’s too painful.”
Bethany was in the back seat.
