“You didn’t know that?”

Jace hasn’t told me much about being on the team. He said he doesn’t like talking about it. And he’s not one to brag about his accomplishments so I’m not surprised he didn’t tell me he was their star player.

“I knew he played,” I say. “I just didn’t know he was the star of the team.”

“It’s too bad he got hurt. I play football so I know what it’s like to have an injury take you out of the game. But luckily, I’m still able to play.”

“What position?”

“Receiver.”

“You look like a quarterback.”

He chuckles. “I get told that a lot.”

We continue to talk about football. Dan really likes football. I’m thinking that might be all he can talk about. Every time I try to change the subject, we end up back on football.

As Dan rambles on about his upcoming game, I search the room for Jace. I don’t see him. Maybe he decided not to show up.

Just as I’m thinking that, I see him coming through the door wearing a black button-up shirt and jeans. He looks really good.

Our eyes meet and my heart takes off, beating fast and hard like it’s trying to tell me how much it wants Jace. I’m not listening to it. Jace doesn’t want me, so I don’t want him. I’m done waiting for him to change his mind about us.

So why am I still looking at him? And why is he looking at me?

He’s coming toward me now. He looks angry. His eyes go to Dan, who just put his arm around me.

Okay, now I know why he’s angry.

CHAPTER NINETEEN

Jace

What the hell is Dan doing with Kenzie? And why is she at this party? How’d she even know about it?

“Hey, Jace,” Dan says as I walk up to him. His arm is around Kenzie, which pisses me off, and not just because I wish it was my arm around her, but because Dan has a girlfriend.

“Hey.” I stand in front of Dan, glaring at him. I used to think he was a good guy, but now? Cheating on his girl? With Kenzie? I want to punch the bastard.

“Is something wrong, Jace?” Kenzie asks, sensing my anger.

I glance at her. She looks freaking hot in a tight red dress, her hair down. Every guy here is checking her out. This is why I didn’t want her to come with me tonight. A lot of the guys here are assholes who wouldn’t treat her right.

“Where’s Maddie tonight?” I ask Dan.

Maddie is his girlfriend. They’ve dated for over a year. She’s one of the football cheerleaders and a really sweet girl. She volunteers for all these different kid groups and charities in town. I can’t believe he’d cheat on her.

“Maddie and I broke up,” Dan says, taking his arm off of Kenzie.

They broke up? Why didn’t I know that? He’s friends with Troy, but Troy never mentioned it, probably because we don’t hang out much anymore. Since meeting Kenzie, I’ve been spending my time with her instead of the guys.

“Sorry, I didn’t know,” I tell him.

He nods. “We decided we wanted different things. She’s in a hurry to get married and have kids, and I’m not ready for that. I don’t think I will be for a long time.”

“When did this happen? Recently?”

“A few weeks ago. We talked a lot before we broke up and decided it was best for both of us to just end it.” He drinks his beer. “So how’ve you been? I haven’t seen you around much.”
