Richard handed him a steaming mug and dragged a chair next to Chase. “Drink this. It will help
with the ceremony.”
Chase sniffed it. It smelled like cinnamon. “What is it?”
“Similar to what you had on your wedding night. It will help ease the absorption of the Immortal
essence.”
Chase took a sip and found it creamy with a touch of spice. “Are you all sure about this?”
“There are few other options.”
Chase took another sip and stared at the ground between his feet.
“He is powerful, far more powerful than Devin was. And more ruthless. He has turned the Elders
against their own people. He’s turned the people against themselves.” Richard shook his head. “We
must fight him with all the power we have.”
Chase stared into the mug. “Part of me wishes it happened to some other guy.”
Richard smiled and looked out into the trees. “Do you remember reading The Lord of the Rings
after your father died?”
“I do. You recommended it to me.”
“Do you remember the conversation in Fellowship between Frodo and Gandalf in the Mines of

Chase smiled. He and Sabrina had read the book together, and they’d had a long discussion about
that scene. “‘I wish it need not have happened in my time,’” he quoted.
