Sabrina looked down and saw the blood and cuts all over her body. “I disobeyed

Master.”

The man smiled. “You did?”

“Why do you smile?”

“You are strong. You will defeat him in the end.”

Sabrina shook her head. “I am not strong.”

“You are. I can help.”

“Why would you help me?”

The man frowned and stared across the room. He didn’t speak for a long moment.

“Hope for redemption.” He turned suddenly. “Why did you disobey your Master?”

“He . . .” Sabrina stared at the ground, trying desperately to grasp any of the flitting

thoughts in her head. “I don’t remember.”

The man walked over and kneeled in front of her. “You must. You must remember. Why

else would he punish you? You must remember. That will help you defeat him.”

Sabrina closed her eyes and tried to remember something . . . Anything that would help.

A flash of a face made her jump. “A man. I . . . did something—no, I didn’t do something.”

She looked up. “I didn’t kill him and it made Master angry.”

“Why? Who was he?”

Sabrina closed her eyes again, concentrating on the face. “My . . . husband?” It didn’t

sound right, but it felt right. The memories, blurry and smoke-like, began to form in her

mind. “Master wanted me to kill him. And others. I disobeyed.”

“Good. That is good. Hold on to those memories. Use them to fight against him.”

“But he is strong.”

“He gets his strength from you. That’s why he punishes you for disobedience. If you are

yourself, he cannot control you. Love. Love is what will save you.”

A flash of light made them fall backward away from each other.

“Sabrina!”

“My lord!” Neil rushed into the den where Damian rested before resuming Sabrina’s punishment.

She’d been responding nicely and then suddenly stopped. He’d let her rest and recover a bit.

“What?”
