Jayson nodded absently. “Have—has Lia said anything?”

“I haven’t seen her but Richard said she won’t talk.”

“Where is she?”

“At the Manor. In a guest room,” he added. “Richard’s treating her well.”

Jayson blinked several times and stood. “I don’t know what to think about her.” He walked to the

window and looked out. “I thought we had something special.”

“I thought so too, Jay. I thought she really liked you.” He sighed. “Richard said she’s terrified.

Maybe . . . Maybe she really did like you.”

“Maybe she was just using me.”

“Maybe.”

Jayson turned. “She talked to him, her brother, a lot. She always looked scared after.” His jaw

trembled. “That weekend she visited him and then he moved here? She had bruises on her arms when

she got home and refused to stay the night. Honestly, it reminded me a little of when Sabrina first got

here.” He paused. “But when he came here, she was different. No one could deny she adored him.

that mean? Chase rubbed his stubbly cheek. He hadn’t shaved in a few days. What was the point?

“When we get back from DC, I’ll ask if I can take you to her.”

Jayson’s eyes lit with hope but it vanished as quickly as it appeared. “I don’t know if I want to

see her.”

“I understand. If you don’t want to, I won’t take you. But if she’s like Sabrina, and somehow

connected with you, maybe she’ll talk to you about what’s going on.”

“I’ll think about it.”

CHASE STARED OUT THE WINDOW AT THE TREE- LINED STREET AS LANCE DROVE THE SUV SLOWLY

toward Damian’s suburban DC house late Tuesday morning. It was eerily similar to the journey they’d

made not long ago. Chase blew out a breath and fogged up the window.

They’d taken turns driving through the night to get here before an appointment Damian had with a

Senator. Outside the house, Damian might be less likely to want a brutal confrontation. If they could

get Sabrina away from him, Richard was confident Chase could win her over and she’d be released
