them I regret everything. If I could go back and change my choices . . .” He trudged back to

his bed and sat down hard. “I did bad things, Sabrina. Very bad. But not as evil as what

your Master has planned. He must be stopped. If they thought I was bad . . .” He shook his

head. “He must be stopped.”

“How?”

“You must be strong. You are stronger than he is. You must fight him with all that you

are. I will do what I can here . . .” He took Sabrina’s hands in his own. “Remember him and

he will give you the strength you need.”

“Who?”

“The man you love. Remember him and you will be able to fight your Master. Love is so

much stronger than the power he wields. Believe me.” He let out a low chuckle. “He won’t

like it. He will punish you and make you wonder if it’s worth it, but it is. Remember.”

“But I don’t know who you’re talking about.”

“You will. You must.”

He grew smaller. Sabrina squinted as her vision blurred. A pain in her head made the

image even more blurry.

She saw him as if through a wall of water.

“Remember.” His voice was faint and wobbly. “Remember.”

Sabrina sat up. The room was black, save a small night light in the far corner. She looked around.

Where was she?

Remember.

Who was she supposed to remember? Where was she? Why did she feel so alone?

She slipped under the quilt that lay beneath her and hugged a pillow to her chest as tears seeped

from her eyes. She squeezed them shut and tried to ignore the voice in her head.

How could she remember a thing she didn’t know?

MONDAY MORNING , CHASE STARED OUT OVER THE WATER OF THE CHARLES RIVER AS THE SUN ROSE.

His breath blew out in front of him in long puffs of white fog and he shivered in his coat. He should

have dressed warmer, but he didn’t want to. The cold made him shake, which hurt. But it lessened the

pain in his heart.
