away. It was too painful to watch. Out of the corner of his eye, he saw Ethan slump against his captors

and hang his head.

“He doesn’t believe anything will truly happen to Sabrina here,” Tommy said in a quiet voice.

“He wouldn’t give up that easily.”

Chase swallowed. Tommy was right. They were going to have to be more drastic in their testing.

“Do you think Sabrina would help us if you told her the truth?”

“She’s going to be furious with me one way or the other, and she’s developing a stubborn streak. I

honestly don’t know if she’d help. Then again, if I don’t tell her, she might rage and that would be

dangerous for everyone.”

Richard approached. “We have to push him more.”

Chase nodded. “Tommy and I were discussing that. But I worry about Sabrina.”

“She’ll understand, eventually.”

“I worry she’ll rage.”

“Oh.” Richard inhaled deeply and stared at the locked door. “That room is strong. I think she’ll be

safe in there. Wilhelm, Tom, and I can put extra protections around it, just in case.”

Chase nodded.

“He needs a stronger drug though.”

Chase glanced at Ethan. He looked depressed, not determined.

“He needs to believe it’s real.”

“Then we make it real. For him.” He took a deep breath and pushed aside his emotions and

doubts. He walked over and stood in front of Ethan who’d fallen to his knees. “Stand up, you son of a

bitch.”

Ethan’s head snapped up, and he stared at Chase a moment before shifting his weight and standing.

They stared at each other for a long minute. Ethan’s eyes were dilated, and he swayed on his feet.

He’d been given enough of the drug to lower his defenses, but not enough to forget the truth of where

he was. He knew the men involved too well to believe they would hurt Sabrina. It just left him feeling

defeated and unable to fight.

Ethan lowered his gaze. “I’m sorry, man.”

“Go to the table,” Chase said.

Ethan obeyed.
