Ethan she knew. And she’d healed his hurts this morning. What was going on?

Richard stood in front of him and ran his hand down Ethan’s chest and stomach, then cupped his

balls. Ethan’s jaw trembled, and he squeezed his eyes shut.

Sabrina could hardly bear the fear streaming out of Ethan. Why were they doing this? Didn’t they

know what he’d endured as a child? She dug her fingernails into her palms, but when the three Elders

pushed in close to Ethan, and he panted, she couldn’t hold it in anymore.

“Stop!”

Chase whirled around and gave her such a stern look, she fell back. “Sit!” He stabbed a finger at

the place she’d vacated, and she dropped back to her knees without thinking. Chase glared at her and

tears filled her eyes.

“Alex, please take Sabrina to the holding room,” Chase said in an emotionless tone and turned

back to face Ethan and the Elders.

Alex pulled her to her feet. “Leave me alone!” She kicked and screamed, but Alex picked her up

without effort and carried her through a door at the side of the room. “Let me go!” He gently placed

her on the ground and opened his mouth, as if to say something, but shook his head and closed the

door behind him. She heard a click.

The room was dark and cool. “Chase!” She pounded on the door. “Ethan!”

Chase stared at the closed door as Alex returned, slipping a key into his robes. “You were right,”

Alex murmured, taking his place next to Chase. “This will make it easier on Ethan.”

“How?”

“Now he has something to fight for besides himself.” He nodded toward the center of the platform

where Wilhelm was holding back a struggling Ethan.

“Let her go!” Ethan glared at Richard. “What if she falls asleep?”

Richard frowned. “You should have thought about that before you showed how weak you are.”

Chase flinched. He hated this more than he imagined he would. In his head, he knew they had to

push Ethan to his limit, but watching them abuse his best friend, accusing him of something he was the

absolute opposite of, made him want to punch someone in the face.

“I am not weak,” Ethan said behind clenched teeth, pulling against Wilhelm. His eyes flashed and

he struggled hard. He almost got free, but Alex lunged forward and helped his father. “Alex, you
