and teased all night like Alex had been?
Sabrina shifted and relaxed suddenly. He looked down and found her sound asleep. He smiled
and pushed her hair back away from her face. “I don’t think she slept at all last night.”
“Did you?”
Chase shook his head. “My mind wouldn’t let me.” He yawned and stretched, trying not to wake
Sabrina. “It’s weird being back in Mom’s house.”
“I bet.” Jayson put his feet on the table. “You can stay here if you want.”
Chase glanced down at Sabrina. “Don’t think that’d be a good idea.”
“Yeah.”
“Mom’s house isn’t bad. It’s not like she’s hovering over me making me eat my broccoli.”
Jayson laughed. “Did she ever do that?”
Chase laughed with him. “No. She’d just give me a look and not let me have dessert.” He leaned
his head on the back of the couch, smiling as he remembered simpler times.

“WHY CAN ’ T YOU JUST GO TAKE HER?”
Damian looked up from his phone at Sydney’s question. She watched him from his bed across the
room, bruised and exhausted.
She’d returned from Boston a few hours ago. He’d listened to her story and knew she hadn’t done
anything wrong. He still needed her for his original plan, so he’d shrugged off his fury and took the
remaining anger out on her in what she called “playing rough,” but he considered playing nice.
“What?”
“That girl you want. Why can’t you just go get her?”
It amused Damian that Sydney was thinking about Sabrina. She knew of her because he’d
mentioned her while talking to Neil. “I understand you graduated from West Point.”
Sydney’s eyes narrowed. “Who told you that?”
Damian smiled. “I have my sources. How did you end up being a mercenary?”
She set her jaw and flopped onto her back to stare at the ceiling. “It’s none of your business.”
“It’s unusual for someone like that to turn mercenary.”
“I like the money.”
Damian chuckled. “Likely, but I don’t see you being motivated by that.”
