Richard raised his eyebrows. “He’s stepped up his game.”

Chase glanced out into the snow-covered front yard of Richard’s home. “She’s worried.”

“Of course she is. She loves you.”

“I hate making her worry. She smiles and tells me she’s fine, but I can see the shadows in her

eyes. It happened because she defied him. She feels responsible and I don’t know how to help her.”

“It’s natural for her to feel responsible. It happened because of a choice she—”

“You think she should have chosen otherwise?”

“Of course not.” Richard stood and walked to the tall window. “He’s not going to stop. He’s

determined to get her back.”

“I wish we knew who he was. Then I could take care of the whole thing.”

Richard turned and gave him a sad look. “I doubt your normal methods of dealing with the enemy

would work this time, Chase. I have a feeling if you shot him, he wouldn’t die.”

Chase sighed. Richard was right. If the guy could appear in flames, it was unlikely a bullet

between the eyes would do anything to him. “So what do I do? How do we win?”

“Until we know who he is, we can’t. But we keep fighting. Fighting smart.” He opened his mouth

to speak but closed it again. “Tom and I had a long talk this morning about who he might be and where

he might be hiding.”

“And?”

Richard shook his head. “We don’t know. Tom talked with Vlad over in St. Petersburg, thinking he

might get something out of Devin that could help, but Devin hasn’t been cooperative. He’s incoherent

most of the time.” Richard sighed and looked back out the window.

Chase waited patiently. He could see Richard was contemplating their options, and the older man

knew much more of the workings of an Elder-type person than he did.

At long last, Richard turned away from the window. “Did you speak with Sabrina about when you

would get married?”

“We talked last night when I took her home. You said we could have a bit of leeway with the end

of the year, so I proposed the end of January.”

“Perhaps it would be better to get married sooner than later. Then all the protections would be in

place.”

Chase frowned. “I thought we had to make the event a big, showy thing.”
