“Maybe it would be better for me to go live in the Manor.”
“Is that what you want?”
She instantly regretted her words at the hurt she saw in his face. “No. I just don’t like you being
attacked because of me.”
“How do you know it was because of you?”
Sabrina looked down at her hands. “I had a dream last night . . . this morning.” She looked up.
“He told me if I didn’t go with him, he’d kill you.” She squeezed her eyes shut. “It’s my fault.”
Chase wrapped his strong arms around her, rocking her gently. “Sabrina, he’s just trying to scare
us. Once we’re married, it’ll be better. We’ll both be safer.”
“Won’t he keep coming after you? After me?”
“Richard doesn’t think so. Your Master is desperate and taking extreme measures to scare us
apart. Us not getting married is exactly what he wants.”
“Why will us getting married stop him?”
“Because marriage will bind our bodies and souls to one another. You’re bonded to your Master
because of something he did a long time ago. Probably a ritual of some sort. Marriage can compete
with that bond. Sometimes it can be stronger because of the emotions involved. If you don’t love and
respect your Master, the bond is not as strong because you don’t want it. Marriage is something most
people go into willingly. The emotions and desires involved solidify the bond.”
Sabrina leaned her head against Chase’s arm and sighed. What he said made sense. For the most
part. She hoped it was true.

CHASE WALKED INTO RICHARD ’ S OFFICE LATER THAT AFTERNOON AND SLUMPED INTO THE LEATHER
chair near the window.
Richard sat in the chair next to him. “How are you doing?”
Chase stared at the empty fireplace. “Honestly, I’m not entirely sure. I’m not used to being
targeted just because of who I am. Normally if someone’s shooting at me, there’s a reason.”
One side of Richard’s mouth tipped up into a smile. “There was a reason for this.”
“I know, but this is different. I wasn’t attacking anyone when it happened. I was sleeping.” He
paused. “Sabrina told me she had a dream last night. That her Master threatened to kill me if she
didn’t go to him.”
