story about the explosion and strange fire. Richard listened silently, fingers tented in front of his lips,
tapping them occasionally.
“What do you think that was?” Chase asked once he’d finished.
Richard was silent for a few minutes. “It sounds as if someone is protecting you. You’re sure it
wasn’t Theo?”
Chase shook his head. “At least I’m pretty sure it wasn’t. It didn’t look like him and the figure
called him by name.” He chewed his lip. “Besides, wouldn’t Theo have said something about it when
he was here?”
“True.” Richard paused, looking thoughtful. “What name was the Immortal called?”
Chase closed his eyes, remembering the heat of the fire, the fear coursing through his body . . .
“Khyan.” He opened his eyes.
Richard’s eyebrows raised. “You’re sure he said ‘Khyan’?”
Chase nodded.
“Hasn’t Sabrina mentioned that name?”
Chase blinked. Of course. He’d thought the name sounded familiar. “Wasn’t he the one who
originally kidnapped Sabrina for her Master?”
Richard nodded. “But she also said he’d not been around much before she escaped. The first
figure stated he’d been betrayed, yes?”
“Yeah.” Chase rubbed his chin. Was it possible the Immortal who’d tortured Sabrina had a change
of heart and was somehow helping her now? Was he watching over him? “But why?”
“Who knows? Perhaps Sabrina won him over. Maybe that’s why he wasn’t a part of Sabrina’s
kidnapping here.”
The thought was uplifting.
Richard stood. “I’m exhausted. I’m going to have a nap and then discuss this with Tom and the
others. They need to know what’s going on.”
Chase groaned as he stood. “Thanks for coming.”
“I will always be here for you, Chase. We need to be watchful and careful.” Richard gave him a
warm smile then pulled him into a hard hug. He looked as if he were going to say something else, but
shook his head. “I’ll let you know what the others say.”
Chase walked the older man downstairs to the front door. “Thanks, Richard.”
