A hand squeezed his and Chase turned his head to see his mother watching him. He knew that

expression. He’d seen it when he’d woken up in the hospital in Germany after the mess in Syria. But

Theo hadn’t been there then. Where was he?

Chase looked around. He was in his childhood bedroom at his mother’s house.

He sat up. Ethan and Casey stood near the door, looking relieved. Richard crouched on the floor

next to Sabrina.

He frowned. Why was she on the floor? “Is she okay?”

“She will be,” Theo said. “I needed to attend to you first.” Theo kneeled next to her, placing his

hand on her head and closing his eyes.

Chase looked at Richard. “What happened?”

“She tried to heal you but she was thrown back.” Richard turned to watch Theo.

Sabrina groaned and shook her head slowly before opening her eyes. “Theo! Is Chase okay?”

Theo chuckled and nodded toward Chase. “He is fine, little one.”

“Oh, Chase!” Sabrina said, struggling to her feet and rushing to him. She flung herself onto his

chest and held him tight. “I don’t know what I would have done if . . .” She shook her head.

He rubbed his hand along her back and into her hair, holding her close. Had his life been in that

much danger? He remembered the fire . . . being outside and attended to by the medics, then . . .

nothing.

After a few minutes, she lifted her head and studied his face. “You’re okay?”

He nodded. “At least I think so.” He glanced up at Theo, who nodded. Why had Theo needed to

come and heal him?

He shuddered, remembering the figure in the fire. He needed to talk to Richard—alone—but that

would have to wait. His mother stood nearby, relief evident in her face, waiting patiently to embrace

him. He reached up and pulled her down next to Sabrina to hug her. The two most important women in

his life were with him. He was alive. That’s all that mattered for now.

As the sun rose in the sky, and his mother and Sabrina were satisfied he was okay, Grace took

Sabrina to find a bedroom to sleep in. He saw the worried look in Ethan’s eyes but assured him he

was fine, insisting he needed sleep as much as Sabrina.
