the mood.

She smiled back, thankful he understood her.

When they arrived at Grace’s stately limestone home, they walked upstairs and into what Sabrina

instinctively knew was the room Chase grew up in. Army posters and posters of athletes lined the

wood-paneled walls. A framed photo of a group of men in BDUs hung on the wall near the bed. Her

beloved lay on a full-sized bed beneath a blue-curtained window. His eyes were closed and he

breathed deeply, for a moment, and then his body gave a great shudder. Grace sat next to him, holding

his limp hand.

“He’s so pale,” Sabrina whispered.

Grace looked up as Sabrina approached. “Can you heal him?”

Sabrina winced at the anguish in Grace’s voice. Richard nodded, and Sabrina sat on the bed at

Chase’s side. She reached for the angry red wound but when she touched it, it was like fire and ice at

the same time. She flinched but would not let the pain stop her. She put her hand on his side again and

gritted her teeth as Chase’s pain seeped into her fingertips. She groaned but refused to let go.

Her eyes closed and a dark face flashed in her mind. She gasped as she felt the anger of her

Master.

“You cannot heal him, Sabrina,” his low, raspy voice echoed in her mind. “It will destroy

you.”

Sabrina set her jaw. “So be it. I’d rather die than live without him.”

Master laughed. “You cannot die, Sabrina. You will live without him.”

Fire blasted through her veins and she flew away from Chase and off the bed. Theo!

A flash of light filled the room, and she vaguely saw the shape of a glowing Theo before blinding

pain exploded in her head.

Chase groaned as his lungs tightened in his chest. The pain in his side seeped away, like water in a

river, but he still struggled to breathe.

A large hand rested briefly on his forehead and his body relaxed fully, allowing his lungs to do

their job and suck in the much-needed oxygen. His eyes fluttered open, and he saw a dark shape

hovering over him.

Chase frowned. “Theo?”

The giant’s face erupted into a broad smile. “You are well. Good.”
