“Now is the time to fulfill our plans, Immortals. If you want to rule again, you must devote the
next few weeks to convincing the rest of the world Elders of the right way to think.”
The Immortals nodded in agreement.
“Give me your Mistresses for the night and I will return them fully devoted to our cause and me.
Return to your home countries tomorrow filled with purpose.”
The women stepped forward and bowed low to Damian. It would be an enjoyable night. He
turned back to the Immortals. “Enjoy your evening.” Damian led the women out of the room as the
Immortals grabbed the man closest to them. They would ensure every man in the room was fully
devoted to Damian by morning.
Sabrina started to follow Damian, but he held out his hand. “Stay and help the Immortals.”
She gave a single nod and turned away. A man screamed and Damian imagined the pain in his ass
as the Immortal extracted the full devotion from him. No matter. His pain would soon be soothed by
the knowledge of the greater purpose.
A man screamed and Sabrina’s eyes snapped open. She looked around, heart pounding, but
only silence filled her ears.
She lifted her hand before her face but couldn’t see it. She couldn’t see anything except
the white fog. She couldn’t feel anything either. And yet, it was a type of comfort. The fog
meant she was herself. Alone, but herself.
A man appeared slowly in the fog, trembling, with wild, dark eyes. His hair was dark;
his long beard straggly and streaked with gray.
“There is no relief in hell,” he said, looking down at his shaking hands. “Every day,
every night, I’m consumed with her pain, her struggles, her emotions.” He looked at
Sabrina. “It’s what I deserve.”
He looked back at his hands. “I walked down the path he guided me to. Willingly. There
is no one to blame but myself.” He looked back at her, his eyes less wild, but full of grief.
“If I had the chance to do it over, I’d make the same choices.” But he didn’t look happy
about it. “It was what I thought I wanted. But you . . .” He stared intently into her eyes.
“Don’t let him do to you what I did to her. Fight. Fight him with everything you have. You
won’t like what he turns you into.”
The man faded into the fog and Sabrina stared into the vast nothingness once again.
