Chase smiled. “It has.”

Sabrina lay in bed, staring up at the unfamiliar white ceiling. The image of Chase lying on the bed,

pale and nearly lifeless, wouldn’t leave her mind. Why hadn’t she been able to heal him? Why had his

wound burned her? Why did she see her Master when she touched it?

She turned onto her side and stared out the window. The sun was full up now. She’d watched

through the open curtains as the sky turned from black to gray and finally a brilliant winter blue.

She’d promised Ethan she would sleep after Grace had shown her a bedroom on the third floor.

All she’d done was toss and turn and watch the sky change colors.

Being with Chase had put him in danger. The ring on her finger made him the target of her Master.

Her Master wanted her and would do anything to have her.

Why didn’t he just come and get her? Why did he haunt her dreams? She was rarely alone, and

never in public, but surely he had the ability to do something. Couldn’t he blast Ethan away and take

her?

Sabrina shuddered at the thought. The idea was as bad as something happening to Chase.

Both men were unsafe with her in their lives, though. Wouldn’t it be better for everyone if she

surrendered herself to Richard’s care in the Manor? Then Chase and Ethan would both be safe.

She squeezed her eyes shut before the burning tears could escape and curled into a ball. She

pressed her fists into her eyes until she saw golden fireworks. Was her desire to marry Chase selfish?

Would he be hunted the rest of his life because of her? Was the explosion just the beginning?

“Why won’t you leave me alone?” Sabrina whispered. Why couldn’t she be a normal girl? Then

Chase would be safe, and she wouldn’t have a deranged lunatic of a Master determined to get her.

She was trapped. Her very existence put those she loved in danger.

Someone knocked softly on the door and Sabrina turned over to see Chase standing in the

doorway. His hair was wet and his face was clean.

“How are you feeling?” Sabrina asked softly, sitting up in the bed.

Chase walked into the room and sat down on the bed. “I feel fine. Did you get any sleep?”

Sabrina shook her head.

“Neither did I.” Chase smiled wryly. He took her hand. “It’ll be okay, Sabrina.”

Sabrina looked down at their entwined fingers. “How do you know?” She looked up into his kind

gray eyes. “You and everyone around me are in danger.” She pressed her lips together for a moment.
