I manage to get dressed and do my makeup and hair in under twenty minutes. I skip down the stairs and find Anton with my mother, looking at my baby album.
“Seriously, Ma?” She smiles as she closes it.
“It’s not often you bring a man home.” Oh god, here we go.
“Anton is not my boyfriend. He’s my gay best friend.” Her face goes red, and Anton laughs.
“She should be so lucky. I love your daughter to death.” He throws his arm around my shoulder and kisses my cheek.
A throat clearing behind us makes me turn slightly, and I meet a pair of very angry steel-gray eyes.
“Jade, a word.” Ciarán’s clipped voice leaves no room to argue as I watch him leave the room as if he expects me to follow.
“My word. He’s in a mood.” Ma says as she pats my arm.
“Um, excuse me. I’ll just be a moment.” Anton smiles.
“No rush. Our reservations aren’t for another hour. I know my girl.” I roll my eyes as he and Ma carry on about how I’ll be late for my own funeral.
I step into the hall and run into a muscled chest.
“What the hell,” I look up at Ciarán, who’s blocking the way.
He grabs my arm and drags me down the hall and into his office.
“Who the fuck is that?” He points the way we came before shutting the door aggressively.
“Anton?” I’m confused by his crazy behavior.
“Are you asking me or telling me?” Oh, that’s it.
“I wonder if you’ve lost your mind! You don’t have a right to question me like this. I’m an adult and can do what I please.” I cross my arms over my chest defensively.
“Not in my house.” My eyes widen.
“Are ya saying I’m no longer welcome in my own home?” He flinches.
“No, that wasn’t,” I raise my hand.
“I don’t know what the fuck has gotten into you, but I’m late for a brunch date. Maybe you’ll be back in your right mind when I return.” I push past him and open the door.
“When will that be?” I stop at his tone.
“I will remind you, dear brother, that I have no curfew. As I previously said, I am an adult. Secondly, you are not my father. I’ll return when I damn well please.” I slam the door closed between us and take several deep breaths before turning to go get Anton.
Before I can take a step, the door flies open, and Cairán pins me to the wall in the hallway. His lips are on mine a moment later, and he kisses me with a desperation that I could very easily get addicted to.
“Go on, but you’re going on your little date with my taste in your mouth.” He drops me back to my feet after hissing the words on my face.
He stomps away in the opposite direction, leaving watching him.
I’m not sure since he kissed the common sense out of me but I do believe he’s jealous of Anton. I shake it off and go grab my best friend.
We have a ton to talk about.
