I let myself in, both Cass and I have keys to each other’s places. “Cass?” I call out as I close the door behind me. I texted her earlier this morning and told her I’d be dropping by sometime today. “Cass?” I call out again when I hear no movement.
I notice there’s a man’s jacket lying on the back of the couch, is there someone here?
“Cass?” I call out once again, louder this time, and immediately hear noises from upstairs followed by footsteps pounding on the stairs.
“Saylor, I didn’t expect you this early,” Cass says panting as she comes down the stairs.
I smile as I take in her disheveled look. Her hair’s mused, she’s dressed just in her robe and she keeps glancing upstairs.
“I can see that.”
She crosses her arms over her chest and scowls at me, “Say, is everything okay?”
“I need to talk to you.”
She glances upstairs once again and then back at me. “Can we do this later?”
“No, Cass, we can’t.” There’s steel in my voice. “I want to know why you answered my cell while we were in Vegas and then failed to tell me about it.”
Her eyes widen as her face pales. “Say…,” she begins but I shake my head.
“You made me think that he didn’t want me, Cass! Why on earth would you do that?”
“I’m sorry. I was hurt and upset. Then you came into the suite and you looked so sad. When he called, I lost it. I thought I was doing the right thing.” Her hands shake as she walks toward me.
“Even when you found out I was pregnant, I cried on your shoulder, Cass. Telling you how broken I was that the man I have strong feelings for doesn’t feel the same.”
Tears stream down her face but she offers no explanation.
“Cass, I thought he was heartless, that he was ignoring me. I feared that I’d lose my job and the entire time he thought I was a bitch that fucked him and left.”
She sobs softly and the anger I had disappears instantly. I hate that my best friend is crying.
“I’m so sorry, Say, I really am. I never meant for either of you to get hurt.” She wipes away her tears. “I thought that you didn’t want anything more to do with him. I really did. It’s why when your cell rang I told him to leave you alone.”
I sit on the couch, unsure what to make of this. One thing I know about Cassie is that she doesn’t have a malicious bone in her body, she wouldn’t hurt me this way, not intentionally.
“Cass, why didn’t you tell me after you realized that it wasn’t true? That I actually loved him?”
She kneels in front of me, her hands taking mine and she squeezes them tightly. “I want the absolute best for you. I want you to be loved and cherished and at that moment I didn’t think it was anything other than a one night thing in Vegas. When we got home, it slipped my mind that I had spoken to him. I was preoccupied with Paul and cancelling the wedding, when I finally realized it was too late. I couldn’t tell you, it had gone too far and every day I have hated myself.”
My tears begin to fall. “Cass, what’s going on with you? This isn’t like you. I didn’t even know you had thought about dating again, let alone sleeping with a guy.”
“I don’t know,” she confesses quietly. “I hurt so much, Say, everyone knows how stupid I was. I was betrayed by a man that I loved. A man I would have done anything for. I was getting ready to live the rest of my life with him and he threw it all away as though I meant nothing.”
My heart breaks listening to her, I pull her into my arms and hold onto her. “Cass, Paul is a fool. He’s lost the best thing that’s ever happened to him. What he did hurt, yes, but, Cass, you’re loved no matter what. It’s time to remember the Cass that you were before it was Cass and Paul. The girl that was happy and fun.”
She nods. “Yeah, I guess you're right.”
I laugh. “No guessing about it. It’s time to show Paul that you’re better off without his cheating ass.”
She looks up at me, her eyes full of tears. “What would I do without you?”
I shrug. “Be miserable. I’m not going anywhere. My baby’s going to need their Godmother in their life.”
Her eyes widen and a huge smile forms on her face. “Oh, Say!”
“So wipe your tears, I’m going to leave you to get back to your man.” I can’t help the huge grin that I have.
Her cheeks redden. “Um, yeah.”
I stand. “Have fun! Don’t do anything I wouldn’t.”
She laughs. “That’s not saying much, Say. You got pregnant.”
“Exactly.” I kiss her cheek, “Go, I’ll let myself out.”
“Love you, Say!” she tells me as she begins walking toward the stairs.
“Love you too,” I reply as I take my cell out of my bag and call Everett.
