“’I want to know you moved and breathed in the same world as me.’ You own my heart and you always will.”

I sniveled, unable to say anything to match his perfect words.

I cried the entire flight, accompanied by a plain pine box containing the remains of Chaz. The Marines escorting me home gazed at me with sympathy assuming that was the reason for my unrelenting sobs.

“How long will I be under surveillance?” I asked Max as he stepped into the kitchen of my tiny row house holding the duffel bag containing the books and clothing I’d brought home with me.

“Until one of you screws up,” he said honestly.

“He won’t. He’s too smart for that.”

“Love makes smart men do dumb things,” Max looked at me.

I met his eyes, nodded and shrugged. “How is Sarah?” Given the history, I can’t imagine she was too thrilled with this arrangement. Even though my relationship with Max had occurred only while they were legally separated and he chose her, she never stopped viewing me as a threat.

He didn’t answer the question. I hadn’t expected him to.

“And it makes smart women reckless,” he added.

“Are you in love with him,” he asked outright. I looked at him calmly, but didn't answer. He tossed a picture from the compound of us walking together onto the table. I was surprised, but hopefully didn't convey that. We were both covered up so there was no proof at all that it was us, could have been any couple out strolling the grounds.

“You know you look pretty damn good for someone held captive for over 3 months. Your husband is dead and yet, you look fit and healthy.”

“My husband got what he deserved.”

Max nodded. “On that we agree.”
