I’m a little anxious wondering how we want to spend our time. That is, if he wants to spend the rest of the day with me. Every time he says something, I flinch, thinking our time together is coming to a close. And rightfully so, he’s still wearing yesterday’s outfit. Those muscles that twitch when he squeezes the steering wheel wouldn’t fit comfortably in anything I’ve got.

Not that I would mind seeing him try them on.

“Do you mind coming with me to my place so I can change?” He asks, pulling on a pair of shades from the middle console. He does it so smoothly while cruising along the coast. “Then we can stop and pick something up to eat at your place for a late lunch?”

My heart thumps quickly in my chest. “Yes!”

Ugh. I sound so eager.

But I am. I’m addicted to him and I need to soak up every second.

“Except… Can I cook something for you?”

Sal looks taken by surprise as he says, “Sure, that sounds nice.”

We ride the rest of the way in a comfortable silence and I try to figure out what I’m going to cook for him.

The apartment blows me away. Suddenly I’m reconsidering spending the weekend at my place when we could be overlooking the ocean!

He has glass from the floor to ceiling and it’s tinted so we can see out but the sun doesn’t heat the place up. I stand on the balcony while he’s packing a small backpack in his room.

The wind blows around me, sweeping my bangs from my face. It’s glorious up here on the tenth floor, and I’m feeling self conscious.

My place is so small in comparison. He’s got real hardwood floors and paintings along the walls that look ritzy.

There’s no way he’s renting this place.

And there’s no way he’s gonna want to come sleep at my place.

Yet here he is ten minutes later wearing his shades on top of his head and a pleasant grin.

“Ready?”

I nod, closing the sliding glass door behind me.

The ceilings are insanely tall. There are a few decorations but I notice how there are no photos.

My phone buzzes and I follow behind Sal, distracted by a message from Anthony.

Tony: Are you alive??? Did Danny come get you from the bar??

Does he remember that he told me to go fuck our boss?

How do I tell him that I did in fact do what he said?

I click my phone closed and shove it in my pocket. I’ll answer him later. Though I have no clue what to say or how to say it.

“Your place is amazing,” I say, as he locks up.

There’s a fancy number key lock.

“Next time…”

He doesn’t keep talking and I don’t ask him what he was going to say.

My heart lurches in my chest but I’m quick to kick it back into place.

“How far is it to the ocean?”
