Page 132 of Dark Awakening

I look around at the pillars marked with symbols of the realms, then share a confused, frustrated glance with Adrian. He starts yanking at a pillar as I push against one, our grunts echoing off the walls. But the carved marble doesn't budge. After a few fruitless moments, I step back, sweat beading on my brow.

"What now?" I ask with a sigh.

Adrian shakes his head, brows knitted in consternation. A tense uncertainty hangs in the dusty chamber air.

I start pacing around the pillars, examining each closely. Looking up in surprise, I see elaborate carvings of mythical creatures above each column. A vivid green dragon with flaming breath looms over the fire pillar. The water column has a bubble-blowing blue mermaid. A white pegasus with wings spread flies above the air, a woman wearing a cloak hovers over the Earth pillar, an angelic figure with wings stands above the light pillar, while a shadowy fae creature lurks over magic.

"Look!" I exclaim, pointing up eagerly. The others follow my gesture, mouths agape at the menagerie of images.

When I'm ready to give up, instinct guides me. "Let me try something," I announce, then sprint for my discarded gear.

I grab my water bottle with clammy hands before hurrying to the water pillar. Holding my breath, I pour the contents over the top. The pillar begins glowing an ethereal blue as water streams down the sides. Then, with a grinding rumble, it rotates clockwise.

"Their elements activate them!" Adrian declares in an awed tone. We all scramble to a pillar, eager to unlock their secrets.

Rhyland grabs a match and sets it atop the fire pillar. As flickering flames lick the stone, it slowly rotates with a rumble. Erik and Adrian activate the air and earth pillars in turn with gusts of wind and handfuls of soil.

Rhyland grins at me playfully. "This one's yours, Angel."

Taking a deep breath, I summon a shimmering light and gently place it on the pillar. It immediately glows with white luminescence, clicking into motion.

Only the Fae pillar remains. "I think this one's for you, Adrian," I say with a smirk.

He returns my smile and conjures a sparkling green orb of magic, pressing it to the pillar's surface. It shines with emerald light before rotating into place.

Suddenly, mechanical whirring echoes through the chamber as long-dormant machinery awakens. With a grinding of stone on stone, a concealed entrance reveals itself in the carved wall.

Icy air gusts through the opened passage, making me shiver. The crown's energy surrounds me, drawing me toward the hidden chamber beyond. Its power hums in my veins, calling me closer.

The passage seems to stretch on endlessly, lit by flickering torchlight. Exotic scenes decorate the walls, vividly depicting faraway lands and legends. I can feel the relic's presence growing stronger with each step, my heartbeat quickening in response.

We appear in a vast chamber, illuminated by constellations of magical glowing gems embedded in the ceilings and walls. As I take in the sparkling display, my awed gasp echoes through the room. At the center sits a raised dais with four carved sections: earth, air, water, and fire. A shimmering orb of pristine light rests atop a central pedestal, its crystalline facets throwing rainbows across the room.

Erik stands on the platform, frowning as he examines its intricate carvings and symbols. He runs a hand over the dusty surface thoughtfully. "It looks like we need to align the elements somehow."

Adrian's gaze fixes on the giant glowing sphere. "Maybe these levers control the elements?" He gestures to several protruding metal handles set into the walls.

Rhyland scans the levers appraisingly and nods. "Let's see what happens." We each move to grasp a rusted lever, their icy metal biting my palm.

Following Rhyland's whispered instructions, we simultaneously pull the handles down at specific angles. The chamber rumbles to life, a breeze swirling through as flames ignite along the walls. Distant water babbles through old pipes while sections of the floor shift and turn.

As the elements align, the orb begins glowing in a discordant clash of colors. They swirl chaotically within the crystal, radiating outward with a jarring hum.

"We've got to find the right combination," I insist, releasing my lever. The others follow suit until silence fills the chamber once more.

Erik examines the carvings studiously, tracing interwoven shapes and lines. "Here are some clues to guide us," he says excitedly.

Adrian points out various symbols on the walls. "See how the elements connect? It's like they want balance."

Rhyland and I share an understanding look. "We need to find the balanced blend," I say firmly.

With intense focus, we experiment with lever combinations and observe the results. The crystal orb illuminates in a myriad of hues, discordant and jarring. Finally, faint notes resonate through the room, blending into a low, steady hum.

The orb glows with vibrant emerald, sapphire, amethyst, ruby, and golden light—a harmony of elements. As it brightens, a hidden door materializes in the chamber's far wall, ornate carvings framed by a brilliant glow.

Gripping our weapons tightly, we step across the threshold with a shared thrill of discovery. Anticipation thrums through me as we enter the unknown. I was meant for this—solving ancient puzzles on an epic quest.

"I feel like Lara Croft!" I shout joyfully, my voice echoing.
