I nearly melt at the protective tone of his voice. Jett’s protecting me and my privacy. The move is as sexy as the heat in his blue eyes before he kisses me.
So much for those fortified walls. All Jett has to do is say one sweet thing and I’m ready to swoon.
“Bet? What bet?” I ask before I decide to hell with risking my heart and carry Jett off to the bedroom for some very satisfying naked time.
“The residents of Winter Falls will bet on anything but their favorite thing to bet on is their matchmaking projects.”
“We have an excellent track record,” Sage says.
“All of our projects have been successful,” Petal claims.
“And now you want to match Jett with me?” I need this to be absolutely clear before I go bat shit crazy on them.
Feather sighs. “You are an adorable couple. And I do love a good work romance.”
“Enough.” Jett growls. “There will be no matchmaking of Aurora and me. There will be no betting. There will be no following us around to spy on us. You won’t stress Aurora out. She’s pregnant and she doesn’t need your shenanigans added to the things she has to worry about.”
And now I really do swoon. I can stand up for myself. I’ve been doing it since I was fifteen. But a man standing up for me? Worrying about me? Protecting me? It’s the sexiest thing I’ve ever experienced. Even better than naked, sweaty time with Jett.
How the hell are my fortified walls supposed to survive an onslaught from protective Jett?
“We’ll back off.” Guessing by the gleam in Sage’s eye, she’s lying.
“Why?” Petal pouts. “We’re going to ruin our perfect record.”
Jett glares at the group. “I’m serious, Sage. If I notice any of you with your binoculars trained on this house, there will be consequences.”
“Hold on. Binoculars? You’re serious about them spying on us?” I glance around the group of women who are old enough to be my grandmother. All except Sage appear innocent.
“I’m a bird watcher,” Clove declares. “I use binoculars for bird watching.”
Jett snorts.
Sage smirks as she studies Jett who is now standing slightly in front of me as if to protect me from them. “I think our work here is done.” She snaps her fingers. “Gossip gals, move out.”
Feather frowns. “But we haven’t asked her to sexy book club yet.”
“Sexy book club?” And here I thought these ladies couldn’t surprise me anymore.
“She doesn’t have time for sexy book club,” Sage declares as she herds the women out of the house.
“What just happened?” I ask once the door is closed behind them.
“You just had your first introduction to small town living.”
Huh. Jett didn’t snarl when he said small town. I thought he hated living here.
“Don’t worry. I’ll make sure those women don’t bother you. I’m late to meet up with the band. You okay?”
“Why wouldn’t I be?”
“There’s my feisty girl.” He kisses my cheek. “I’ll be home later. Try not to work too hard.”
I stare after him as he leaves. If he doesn’t want to be in a relationship with me, he needs to back off. I’m not going to be able to resist him if he goes all protective on me. I won’t want to resist him.
But resist him I must. Little Bean and I don’t need a man who has no staying power.
