I look down at Gina. Even though her eyes are full of tears, she smiles at me.
“Hey,” I whisper.
“Hey, yourself,” she whispers back.
In that moment, as our eyes meet under the light of the full moon, I know we’ll never be parted ever again.
I lean down and kiss her, feeling her reaching up for me. As our lips meet, the pack goes wild around us, baying, howling, and barking their joy into the moon-silvered sky.
Chapter 27 - Gina
Delicate rays of pale morning sunlight flicker through the window, making dancing patterns across the floor and leaving a warm glow across my daughter’s bright golden hair.
I hold her tenderly against my breast, loving the soft touch of her little hands as she kneads against me. She opens her eyes and blinks slowly, looking up at me with a crystal blue gaze that mirrors my own.
“Sweet girl,” I whisper. “Natalia Jane.”
She blinks again, and I see the faintest hint of a smile before she closes her eyes and goes back to the serious business of breakfast. Both her little hands hold onto me tightly, and her tiny body is curled against me as she suckles—the closest two human beings can ever get.
We named her for my grandmother. She is twelve weeks old, and already, her eyes seem to be full of wisdom. She is a very quiet baby, always contemplating the world, and she hardly ever cries.
Well, it’s not like she would ever need to.
From the moment she was born, I think she has always been held in someone’s arms. I hardly ever put her down, and neither does Bae. Mom has been here almost full-time—even Dad loves holding Natalia, not to mention all of my friends, and Mom’s.
I reach over with one hand and gently touch her forehead, tracing along the line of pale gold hair. A lot of her coloring looks like it came from Bae, but her big blue eyes are definitely from my family. Like my mother’s and grandmother’s.
And mine.
Of course, all babies are born with blue eyes, but something about this crystal shade tells me they are here to stay.
Natalia blinks up at me again, and I rock her slowly from side to side. She is beginning to slow down with her suckling and will soon settle down again for another nap. Out in the hallway, I hear a light footstep and turn towards the door with a smile on my face.
“Bae, you didn’t have to get up,” I whisper.
He shakes his head, grinning as he tiptoes across the carpet towards us. “I wanted to say good morning to my little angel,” he says softly. “Besides, you shouldn’t be up doing all the work. If you didn’t have to breastfeed her, I wouldn’t let you get up at all.”
I blush a little, looking away. I knew that Bae would make an excellent father, but the efforts he makes in taking care of me still make me feel very grateful and loved.
Natalia lets go of my breast and looks up at Bae, gurgling happily. He picks her up and snuggles her against his chest, closing his eyes as he rocks her gently.
“You ready for a nap?” he asks, looking down into Natalia’s eyes.
She coos at him, holding up her hands towards him and trying to giggle. He tickles her tummy, and she wriggles, grabbing for his fingers.
“She doesn’t look like she’s ready for a nap,” I laugh. “Not now that you’ve come in and woken her up.”
“I did no such thing,” Bae says, smiling. “It’s not my fault she’s always so excited to see me.”
Bae rocks her and tickles her some more, singing silly little songs and getting her to reach out with her tiny fingers. I sit on the couch and relax, watching them play. When she starts to settle again, Bae hands her back to me.
“That should settle the little princess down a little. Do you want anything?”
“No, I’m fine.”
“Okay, I’ll go and make you something to eat and drink.”
I chuckle, shaking my head. “What was the point of asking me, then?”
