He walks slowly, takes a seat next to me, and leans back in the chair.
For a while, neither of us says a word, as we both sit there and simply look at each other.
His hands are resting in his lap and his eyes look everywhere around, but me, as he seems nervous.
“Winnie, I…” he trails off, scratching the back of his neck. I have a proposal,” he says, taking a deep breath. Will you marry me?” He blurts out, looking me directly in the eyes.
I stared at him wide-eyed, blinking a few times to let all this sink in.
“Fuck, sorry I meant…” He scratches the back of his head, confusing me the more, “Okay. I want to propose a fake husband and wife deal for a year, with an elaborate wedding to sell it to my father, friends, and the small-town people.” He explains, running his fingers through his dark hair.
My lips parted, my eyebrows furrowed, confused by his sudden proposal. “Why…? What's in it for me?” I ask tentatively.
“I mean I've thought this through, and I realize that this wedding will both get us what we want. For me, a fake wife to get my father off my back, and for you, you'll finally get access to that vast land that was taken from your father by my dad.” He proposes.
I frown deeper, as I conceal my shock and let my thoughts wander on it.
It sounds good enough, my babies were never meant to go missing; I need to find answers—even if it is as his wife. I admit, especially since it can give me easier access to the proof I need. Plus, my brother has always wanted that land.
But how can I be sure he's genuine? I ponder, briefly looking at him. It'll be risky to trust Ted or even be around his father Dr. Sam. Ted Gates is not meant to be my husband.
“This is a risky proposal…” I admit, trailing off, as he stares at me expectantly.
“I'll take it.” I let out a sigh, watching his face metamorphose into an expression of delight.
“Really?” He asks in disbelief as he straightens into his chair in excitement.
I nod my head in agreement.
“Thank you so much.”
CHAPTER 9
Ted
“She said yes,” I mutter to myself as a wide smile spread across my face, “She actually said yes,” I repeat in disbelief, as I stare at myself at my reflection in the bathroom mirror with my hands clasped together, smiling so widely that my cheeks hurt.
“Get a grip man,” I say to my reflection, as I shake my head and laugh softly.
I can already feel the adrenaline coursing through my veins. The anticipation of our meeting today to discuss this further is building up.
I quickly have my shower done and dress up, while I wait for her to come babysit Luna.
And did I mention it? I wait in Luna’s nursery, with her in my arms.
“Luna baby,” I call to my little girl with a big grin on my face, while I raise her up to the air, “Daddy just got lucky.” My voice is filled with so much excitement as I hold my daughter tightly; she lets out a giggle and kicks her legs against me. I smile back and kiss her on the cheek, before placing her down on her cot.
Luna lies back down next to her blanket and stares at me with large eyes. She smiles as I bend down and brush some hair away from her face with my fingers. I gently touch her nose with my fingers, and she giggles again.
“I see you're having a daddy and daughter’s time.” I hear Winnie’s voice coming from the doorway of the nursery, as she approaches my baby with a huge smile on her face, “how is my favorite Luna doing?”
Luna coos and reaches out towards Winnie's hand as she crouches down by the edge of her crib to meet her.
My two favorite females in the room share a short hug before Winnie carries Luna from her crib, holds my daughter in one arm, and brushes her hair out of her face with her free hand.
Luna laughs happily as Winnie ruffles her hair and kisses both of her chubby cheeks.
Luna's giggles turn into small babbles as she reaches up to grab Winnie's hair with both hands.
