His eyes darken considerably as he takes a step back, his hand clenches into a fist as his jaw clenches. “I had the babies taken out to protect my son alright!” Dr. Sam snarls. “Do you know what havoc it'll do to his career if he discovered he had kids with you?!”
My eyes widen at this sudden outburst from him, but the anger inside of me continues to bubble.
“That was not your business to take care of!” I shouted back at him. “I'm calling the police on you.” I threatened to raise my phone up to dial the emergency line when he suddenly came forward and grabbed the folder from the desk. “What are you doing?” I snap, glaring at him. “Give it back, you!” I demand, as my breathing starts to come out in short bursts.
He moves back and raises the folder to the air. He then brings out a lighter and flicks it against the side of the folder, igniting it and causing it to burn. “There'll be no case with the police if there's no evidence,” he growls between his clenched teeth.
I stare in horror at the burning folder in the fireplace he has thrown.
The fire is roaring and burning brightly, casting shadows on Dr. Sam's face as he turns away from me and heads for his door, which opens and closes behind him.
My body trembles with a mix of shock, fear, and fury as I make my way back to the house, back to Luna.
I need to look okay before I go to her, I remind myself, as I get to the door of the Gates mansion.
I take a deep calming breath, feeling like I can breathe normally again, as I raise my hand to open the door, which suddenly swings open to reveal Ted.
I immediately look up, my hand frozen in midair as he looks at me in confusion. “Winnie, you're back,” he says, looking at me with concern. “Everything alright?” he asks gently, stepping closer. You look upset.”
So much for me concealing my expression, I mentally berate myself.
I blink a few times and look away, not wanting to give anything away. “It's just fine. Everything's fine,” I tell him.
He walks forward and rests a hand on my upper arms. I stiffen at this and try to keep my muscles relaxed, as he squeezes gently.
“Winnie.” He calls my attention back to him, as his hand cups the side of my face and he runs his thumb along my jawline gently. “Is everything alright? Are you hurt? Did something happen where you went to?” he asks, sounding concerned.
“Everything is fine,” I say quickly. “Really.” I look away from him.
My heart tugs at the fact that I know he needs to know, and I also need so much comfort from him too, but how will that be when his father is the cause of our misery?
“Are you sure?” he asks, dropping his hand back to his side but keeping his eyes on mine.
I nod quickly. “Yes. Yes. I'm sure.” I say firmly.
And I decide to change the topic. “Where's Luna?” I asked worriedly looking past him, to stare inside. “Oh my, hope she isn't alone, so she doesn't trip or choke on anything,” I say with so much concern. “And has she had her lunch? Shit. I left her starving.” I quickly say as I feel the guilt of leaving gnaw on me.
I take a step forward, and Ted holds me back. “Hey, she's fine,” he says, stopping me dead in my tracks. “She's sleeping right now, and I fed her earlier,” he tells me.
I turn my gaze to look at him, as he gives me an assuring smile.
“Good.” I sigh in relief. “Thank god,” I mutter under my breath.
“I'm her father, remember?” He raises a teasing brow at me, smiling. “I can handle some kid. Don't worry.” He pats my arm reassuringly, as I smile back and look at the door again.
“Uhm, your brother just left.” He informs me, as I'm about to take a step again.
“Oh, okay,” I say awkwardly, I try to make my way inside again, when he grabs my hand, stopping me on my track.
“Winnie?” he calls, dropping his hand from mine and scratching the back of his neck. “Can we talk?” He hesitates a second before he looks down to the floor and bites his lip nervously.
We stand still for a couple of seconds before I decide to speak. “Sure,” I respond quietly.
“Can we go to the study? I think it'll be more comfortable there.” He suggests with a light smile.
I smile back slightly and nod. “Sure.” I agree. We walk inside the house together, and he leads the way to the study.
I sit down in one of the chairs, as I look up at him expectantly.
