Chapter Thirty-Nine
Brooklyn
My nerves are pretty much decimated, even though I know the guys are okay. It’s not just worrying about them getting hurt—mostly because I can feel in the bond that they’re fine. There’s every possibility they could be arrested and put in jail.
Maybe even prison.
I’m not really sure what the difference is between those two things.
“With all the pacing,” Stacia says, nodding at me, “you’ll have gotten your steps in for the week. Why don’t you come sit down? You’re making the dogs anxious.”
Glancing down, I find Nova standing on my right, with her side touching my leg.
Haze tilts his head from his spot on my left.
They’re really great companions.
And it does seem like they’re picking up on my worry, so I walk over to the couch and take a seat.
My leg shakes as I cross it over my knee, but I give her a sincere smile. “Thank you for everything. I know it’s been inconvenient having us completely take over your house.”
Nova is the cuddlier of the two, but Haze brushes his entire body against my knee until I stretch to pet him.
“It’s nothing,” she says. “You’re part of the family.” Her phone buzzes, and she snatches it up. “You can relax. They’re about to pull in.”
Haze runs off, and my entire body aches with the urge to chase after him to see if my guys are in the first set of vehicles.
Haze’s low growl fills the air, and goose bumps erupt on my arms as my eyes widen.
Oh, God.
If Haze is growling…
Who is at the door?
“Bite me, and I will bite you back.” The voice comes from Ranger, even if I can’t see him. He has a very distinct, cold tone that’s impossible to miss.
Haze comes to the side of the couch and growls. Nova stands up, and her massive body pushes my legs back against the front of the couch as I twist to check if my guys are with them.
“Call off your mutt,” Ranger says. “He seems to be overly vigilant at the moment.”
Gunner whistles and calls out, “Come on, Haze.”
Nova runs off, too, and I struggle to get myself up so I can follow them.
I come around the edge of the wall that was blocking my view and have to sidestep Ranger. His long curls fall around his face as he frowns.
“Everyone is fine,” he says, like I should already know that. “Your stress is acrid, and the scent is everywhere. That can’t be good for the baby. You should calm down. Now.”
I blink, tilting my head, but he gives a smile that shows a little too much teeth to be considered friendly.
“Thank you,” I yelp, flattening my back to the wall and sliding past him and then Soren.
Maverick is the first face I spot. He has on the same backward black baseball cap and a black T-shirt that’s different from the one he left in.
I squeal, chucking myself at him without conscious thought. “You’re safe!”
He supports my weight with his forearm under my bottom as I wrap my arms around his neck. “We’re all in one piece.”
