She laughed. “I’m sorry, I should have whispered.”
Beau chuckled along with her. When they reached his truck, he opened the door for her, and she watched him walk around the front of the truck. Should she tell him about Liz? Brenna clenched her fists just thinking back on their very short conversation. She flinched when the driver’s side door slammed shut.
“You’re awful jumpy. Are you alright?” Beau asked with concern.
She let out a sigh. “I’m trying to calm down.”
Beau turned in his seat to face her. “Why? What happened?”
She recounted the confrontation in the restroom.
“I wanted to punch her, Beau. I’ve only ever hit one person in my life, and that was Eric when he told me the affair didn’t mean anything. I couldn’t stop myself from slapping him, and that’s exactly what I wanted to do to her. I wanted to wipe that smirk off her face.” She took a deep breath.
Beau placed his hand on hers. “She’s not worth it.”
“I know, but it sure would have made me feel better.”
“Oh, I agree. I still want to punch Eric. Just for the hell of it. I missed my chance when I found him in my bathroom.”
“I don’t know how you didn’t.”
“I think I was too shocked. I stormed out after telling her to leave. I didn’t return to the house for three days. I stayed with Luke.” Beau shook his head. “If I could go back and get just one shot at him...”
“I understand that, I really do. But we both know violence isn’t the solution.”
“What is then, Brenna? We didn’t deserve what they did to us.”
“I know, and as much as I want to smack her, I know it’s not the right thing to do.”
Beau nodded in agreement, and they rode back to her apartment in silence, each lost in their own thoughts of the betrayal they had experienced.
Parking his truck at the bottom of the stairs leading to her apartment, Beau turned off the engine and turned to look at Brenna.
“Are you sure you’re, okay?”
“I’m getting there. I tried to ignore her when she came into the bathroom, but she just couldn’t keep quiet. I didn’t even respond when she asked about us.”
“That’s good. It’s none of her business anyway. I couldn’t care less about those two, but it seems like it’s really bugging her.” He let out a sigh. “She has no right.”
“Neither of them do. I’m actually surprised they’re still together. I don’t think either one of them will stay faithful. It makes me wonder if this was Eric’s first affair.”
“He messed up something good with you, Brenna.”
She looked at him and gave him a small smile. “Just like she did with you. At least she used the excuse that you were never around. Eric doesn’t have any excuse. Who do you think made the first move?”
“Yeah, I’ve thought about that too, but it doesn’t matter now, does it?”
“No, it doesn’t. Let’s go inside and watch a movie. It’s only ten o’clock.”
“Sure.” Beau got out of the truck and Brenna followed suit, meeting him on the steps up to her porch. He held her hand as they walked up to the door and when they reached it, she pulled out her keys. But Beau took them from her, unlocked the door, and gave them back.
Once inside, they took off their jackets and Beau hung his hat on a hook before heading to the sofa.
“I’m going to change into something comfortable. Have a seat, I’ll be right back.”
“Do you mind if I make some coffee? You said you have decaf.”
“Yes, go ahead.”
