“It’s Aydin.”
“Aydin.” She glanced over her shoulder at Amelia.
“What can I do for you?” Amelia sucked in her breath.
“Tell me the exact words Addison used.”
Amelia peered at Nasir, and he nodded at her to answer. I didn’t like how she was so comfortable with him, but I knew Nasir thought of her as a friend.
“After we left the bathroom, I happened to walk by and overhear Addison’s voice.”
“Anyone else? Think hard. I need to be sure of what my next move will be.”
“I’m positive it was a guy in the room with her.”
“She told me they said something about killing and money,” Nasir finished.
“What money?” I needed enough evidence before I talked to Edgar about his daughter. They’d been a long-time client and respected in the community and world.
“I think the money is from the security firm.”
“Tell me.”
Amelia walked over to the coffee table, picked up her laptop, sat on the couch, and pulled up a document.
“Remember when I said some numbers were off from your payments?” She looked intently at me, and I confirmed with a nod.
“I believe she’s working with someone in the security firm to skew the numbers of payments.”
“Why?”
I didn’t doubt her, but what was Addison’s goal?
“Through her donation and campaign events, she’s cooked the books, and the people she hires have no idea the way she’s moving the money around through her checks.” Amelia spoke with a scroll of each event we’d covered for her and the Chatsworth family throughout the years.
“I need to talk to her.”
“That shouldn’t be a problem. When you call, she runs,” Amelia mumbled under her breath.
I heard her friend giggling under her breath.
“The last thing I heard she’s in Chicago.”
“All right, go to Chicago. Amelia, you’ll have protection until we figure everything out.”
“That’s not necessary.”
She closed her laptop.
“As far as Addison is concerned, she might not have you on her radar, but I can’t take that chance.”
“You’re overreacting.” Amelia jumped off the couch.
“Maybe he’s right, Amelia,” Dani agreed.
“They didn’t see me.”
“How do you know? What happened for you to leave so abruptly?”
