“I think it’s wonderful that you started your own business.” Mom left the trash by the door.
“He encouraged me, and now a lot of his clients come to me for a referral.”
Knock!
“Aydin! Are you ready?” Nasir stood at my open door.
“Yeah.”
“Where are you going?” Amelia questioned.
“A little business.”
“Is this business going to have you gone all day and night?” Amelia clasped her arm with mine, walking me toward the door.
“No, so make sure you cancel any plans with Dani.”
“I’ll finish up here and meet you at home.” Amelia extended her arm around my neck. I bent down to kiss her on the lips.
“Don’t be late,” she muttered through our kiss.
“I won’t.”
Nasir pulled the keys from his pocket and pushed the front door open. I stepped around the passenger side, climbed in, and closed my eyes to relax.
“You ready for this?” Nasir started the car and pulled out of the parking lot.
“He wanted to talk to me. This is a courtesy visit.”
Edgar didn’t realize the weight of his mistakes until afterwards, and I made sure my contacts inside the jail kept me informed of everything he was doing. He’d pressed for me to come and visit him because he had something to tell me. At first, I declined. One thing I’d always remembered was to keep your enemies close, and he was a problem before, so I hoped he’d take my advice and do his twenty years without any disruption.
The guard escorted him in and nudged him to take a seat. He looked like he’d lost a few pounds after being locked up for a year. He cleared his throat.
“Why did you request to see me?”
“Straight to the point.”
Any emotions I had for what I did to his daughter left the second she tried to make it seem like we were more than employees and clients.
“I’m not here to sit and apologize.”
“Didn’t think you’d be so arrogant,” he spat sarcastically.
I lifted my wrist to look at the time.
“You have one minute before I get up and leave.”
“All right, I wanted to tell you that what Addison did was wrong.”
“You understand now that you’re in jail.” I shook my head.
“Look, we can help each other out.”
He looked behind him and to the left as the other guards stood watch.
“How so?”
“I can give you names of people who had a hand in what I was doing.”
