“You mean like the mob?”
Edgar nodded.
“It’s deeper than you think.”
“Why are you telling me this and not the police or your lawyer?”
“Because… Because I need a favor.” He leaned forward and whispered.
“I’m not in the business of doing you any favors.”
“Just hear me out.”
As crazy as it sounded, I could use him for my benefit and get more criminals off the street. Only he’d want something in return, and I wouldn’t go for him getting out after a year.
“First, tell me what you have.”
“The things I know could get me killed, and I need safety or to get out of here.”
I waved off his suggestion.
“You’re not getting out of here.”
“If you put in a good word with the warden, I know I’d get a lesser sentence.”
“That all depends on what you have.”
“The people behind the money I was laundering aren’t happy with you.”
“I don’t care.”
“It’s not safe for me or you, let alone your family.”
“My family will be safe. Can you say the same?”
“Okay, I just need to think about what my next move is going to be.”
“When you figure it out, I’ll be back, and it better be worthwhile.” I stood and turned my back to leave. Edgar thought I’d have some sympathy for him, so I walked through the prison’s front entrance and got back in the car with Nasir.
“How did it go?”
“Like I thought it would.”
“He tried to bribe you?”
I removed my phone from my pocket, went to the recording on my phone, and hit replay.
“I can give you names of people who had a hand in what I was doing.” I held the phone up for Nasir to listen.
“That sounds like we might need to look into this cartel a little further.”
“We can research a little more before we make a decision.”
“Are you going to tell Amelia about this update?”
“As much as I know without worrying her.”
“If I haven’t told you, I’m proud of you, man.”
