Her phone rings, and part of her expects it to be Colt calling to yell at her for shedding her protection detail. Instead, she sees Tara’s name.

“Tara?”

“Lex, I need your help. Please, it’s an emergency,” Tara says, her voice frantic.

“Do you need me to call Ty?”

“A crazy old bitch has Matty locked up in a room, and she beats him. I need to get him out of that house, and Lenetta will have Ty arrested. Please, Lex. It’s Matty.”

Knowing how much Tara loves that little boy, she feels her maternal heartstrings being pulled. She’d do anything for Noah, and she can see that same fight in Tara with this little boy who shares no DNA with her. Avery taught Lex that DNA doesn’t mean much when it comes to being a parent to a child. Not when you love them so much.

“Send me the address I’m going to. I’ll meet you there.”

“Thank you,” she says.

Lex gets the text, and she hurries to the house. Inside, she sees a woman stomping from one side to the other and shouting incoherent statements. Pulling out her phone, she sends the address to Lily Hankinson, the club lawyer, and calls her.

“What’s this?” Lily asks with an annoyed tone.

“The place I may end up getting arrested at.”

“What?” she asks with a sigh, but she knows Lily’s on her way. Luckily, her office isn’t too far from the house, and she knows Lily will back her up. Be her legal muscle.

Lex steps outside of her car and leans against it, her eyes never leaving the crazy woman ranting as she throws things, probably destroying her home. What an idiot.

“Tara’s ex’s little boy is in trouble with whoever it is he’s staying with since his dad’s a piece of shit felon.”

“Uh oh.”

“This bitch is nuts,” she says. “Tara says Matty’s been locked in a room, and I guess she beats him. I don’t see him, just this nut job pacing the house and ranting like a lunatic while throwing shit.”

“Jesus,” Lily says. “Well, we can probably get Tara guardianship of him as long as this woman signs the papers.”

She laughs. “Oh, she’ll be signing them.”

“I’ll be there in two minutes.”

Tara pulls up in her blue Honda and jumps out. “Lex, thank you.”

The brunette looks like she’s about to burst into tears at any moment, and Lex knows it won’t take much for her to swing at Matty’s aunt if she’s as bad as it sounds. “We’re waiting on one more.”

“No, you can’t have any of the guys-”

A silver Benz pulls up, and Lily steps out. “Did anyone think that maybe it might be a good idea to call men from the club? You know, since you’re kind of a target for the Slashers, Alexis?”

“Well, from what Tara says, you’ll be putting in work if we have the club here. Besides, the Slashers aren’t anywhere near, Lillian.”

“How do you know?” Tara asks. “I shouldn’t have called. I wasn’t even thinking, Lex. I’m so sorry.”

“I know because I have this weird connection with the guy who decided he really wants to fuck me. I don’t feel him watching, so we’re clear. And Lily needs to be here because there is about a seventy-five percent chance I’ll need a lawyer. Now, let’s go.”

Lily grabs her arm. “Wait, are we sure something’s happening? This kid could just be upset with her.”

“No, he’s the sweetest kid, and he’s already counting down until he turns eighteen. He’s only eleven, Lily.”

“Look at her,” Lex says and points. “Does she look sane to you?”

“No, she does not,” she says and sighs. “And I was doing to so well avoiding the courtroom lately.”
