I sit up and wipe my eyes. “It’s okay,” I mumble.
“Fuck,” I hear growled. I open my eyes and realise the cover has fallen, my bra-covered chest on display, but that’s not what Mammoth has his attention on. His gaze is fixed on my lashings. I quickly grab the cover, pulling it up to my neck.
“Go now,” Rose orders Mammoth, pushing his large frame out of the door. She turns to me. “Don’t mind him, he's just a big overprotective bear. How are you feeling?” she asks.
"Drained. How long have I been asleep?” I ask. Looking around the room, its then that I realise I am in Khan’s room.
“It’s nearly lunchtime, you needed the rest.” She smiles softly.
“Khan, can we go see him now?” I ask.
She smiles and nods. “Sure, you get showered and I will grab you some clothes,” she says, walking out the room.
I get in the shower and use Khan’s shower gel, being careful around my wounds. I breathe in the smell, the smell of him comforts me.
I get dressed in the deep-green summer dress Rose pulled out last night. You can only just make out the top of the lashings. I walk out into the bar area and all the brothers are stood around talking but they go silent when they see me.
“Can… Can one of you take me to see Khan? Please?” I ask softly.
Rip clicks his fingers. “Golem, drive her up to the hospital, we will follow on our bikes.”
Driving up there, I'm anxious to see him. Once at the hospital, Rip leads the way to Khan’s room. He opens the door and I immediately go to him. He's led there, unmoving, machines beeping and loads of tubes going in and out of him. I hold his hand in mine.
“Khan,” I whisper.
“He still out of it, darlin’, the doctors said that in time he will come around more and more,” Rip says from behind me. I nod, sitting down, not letting go of his hand. “I will leave you to it, don’t leave this room without one of us with you,” he orders before closing the door behind him.
I stroke his hand. “Khan, wake up for me, please… I'm so sorry, you're here because of me. Please wake up,” I plead.
Chapter Twenty-Five
Khan
Waking up, those damn hospital lights hurt my eyes. Why do they have to be so bright? You’d think they would put in a dimmer switch. I feel a weight on my hand, and looking down, I see Bambi, her head resting on my hand. For a moment, I think it’s an illusion from all the drugs pumping through my system. Her eyes flutter open and it takes her a moment to realise that I'm awake.
“Khan?” she whispers softly. Fuck, her broken voice kills me. I remove the mask from my face.
“Yeah, Bambi,” I breathe softly. She jumps up, leaning into me, being careful of my chest. She cups my face and tears run down her cheeks.
“I'm so sorry, Khan, I'm so so sorry,” she sobs.
I frown. “Why are you apologising? You didn’t shoot me.” I cup her face. “Kiss me, Bambi,” I order. She brings her soft plump lips to mine and kisses me softly, too softly, she's obviously scared about breaking me. I lightly push against the back of her head and deepen the kiss until I am actually breathless and need the face mask back on.
“Khan, don’t do that, it’s too soon,” she says, worried.
“It’s a kiss of death I would happily welcome, darlin’.” I smirk.
I press the call button for the nurse. “Let the doctors and nurses check you over, I will get Rip.” She smiles.
I watch her walk out the door, my smile falling as soon as she's gone. I saw the marks on her body. I may be full of hospital drugs, but I know what I saw, and I know it’s not good.
The nurses and doctors poke and prod, removing a few tubes and leaving me with just the oxygen mask.
Rip walks in and smiles. “Damn good to see you awake, brother.”
“It’s good to be awake.” I take a breath. “You got her out.”
“Yeah, we did,” he answers.
