“When was Jenny killed?”
“Today. The car had been running for some time and was almost out of gas when the lawyer called 911.”
“Lucy found her?” Evan ran his hand over his face.
“Is there something you’re not telling me about this case, Evil?”
“Lucy—the lawyer—is my woman.”
There was a long pause. “Is that going to be a problem for the mission?”
“Has the mission changed?”
“No. Bastard has another alibi. His sister is still defending him.”
“That’ll change when she learns about the passport and the Oxy.”
“If they’re even still there. Where did you get the anonymous tip?”
“Another girlfriend.”
“He needs to die before she commits suicide too.”
“Understood,” Evil said, and hung up.
He’d let Warden and Sentinel finish with Marla before he told them the bad news. He called Ryder instead.
“Yo,” she answered. She sounded tired, and he heard the sounds of road noise and talk radio in the background.
“I need you to swing by Atlantic City and find Bradford.”
“What do you want me to do when I find him?”
That’s what he liked about Ryder. No wasted questions like Why?
“What you do best,” he said.
She said nothing. Any other day he would have been proud as shit that he’d left her speechless.
“You all right with my methods?” she asked at last.
“Make it fucking hurt,” he said.
Again she didn’t say anything. For Ryder to be lost for words twice in one day had to be a record. But he had to give her more information. If anything happened to her, it would devastate all of them. She was like a sister to them all.
“Don’t underestimate him. And if you’re not at one hundred percent, just tail him. I’ll send Warden to you.”
“What happened?”
Evil went into his apartment and closed the door. This was more than he wanted to do on an open line, but the chances they were being bugged were slim. “He killed Jenny. Made it look like she committed suicide over Sentinel.”
“How did he do it?”
“He made sure he called his sister yesterday and said he was in Atlantic City, but I don’t buy it. He could have called her from Jenny’s apartment and left after he locked her in the car in the garage with the motor running.”
“That’s the second time this son of a bitch hasn’t been in the same state as his murder victim.”
“He fucked up, Ryder. He might have gotten rid of his alibi, but we got more information from Marla—the chick you sent to us.”
