“That would be great.”

After Justin left for work a few minutes later, Kenny padded out to the kitchen to make breakfast. He was starving. He made eggs and bacon, and leaned against the counter inhaling bites. He cleaned up the dishes and went back to the bedroom, where he passed out facedown on the plush bed. After sleeping for two hours, he woke up feeling better. At least more rested.

He picked up his phone, hoping there would be a text from Cleo, but was disappointed to see nothing. Did he really think she was going to talk to him? Just then his phone vibrated. It was a text from Nico:

Hey. You didn’t come home last night.

Kenny: Yeah. I’m in New York.

Nico: Wait, what?

Kenny: I just needed to get away for a bit.

Nico: What happened last night? You kinda left me in an awkward situation with Cleo.

Kenny: I know. I’m sorry, man.

Nico: I’m fine. Her on the other hand…

Kenny: That bad, huh?

Nico: She looked like a sad puppy dog.

Kenny let out a sigh, rubbing his hands on his face. He had really messed this up. He picked up his phone to reply:

Shit.

Nico: Yeah. What about practice today?

Kenny: Can you cover for me?

Nico: Are you serious?

Kenny: Yeah, I’m going to hang here for a bit. Just say I’m sick or something.

Nico: You owe me.

Kenny: I know. Thanks.

Kenny locked his phone and tossed it next to him on the bed. He put on a movie and zoned out, trying to distract himself from what Nico said about Cleo.

That night, Justin took him out to a popular sushi restaurant. The place was packed and it didn’t look like there were any tables, but the hostess worked her magic and sat them at a private table near the sushi bar. They ordered sake bombs and basically every roll on the menu. Kenny had never tasted anything so good.

He sat back appreciatively, taking a sip of beer and catching his breath.

“Good, huh?”

“I got to hand it to New York. They know how to do food.”

“They also know how to do drinks. I’ll take you to a bar after this. It will blow your mind.”

“Thanks for doing this, man.”

“What?”

“Taking me in like a stray. Hell, I didn’t even show up with clothes or anything.” Kenny brushed his hands down the lapel of the suit Justin lent him.

Justin waved him off. “You’re my best friend.”
