He kept replaying her face in his head when he had gotten up so abruptly. The hurt that filled her eyes that she tried to hide, but failed at. The surprise that parted her lips as she watched him go. He had willed himself to keep walking without turning back because he knew if he looked at her for one more moment, he would cave. He didn’t know what he would be caving into, but he was scared.
He arrived at Justin’s at two in the morning, much to his friend’s surprise, who groggily answered his phone.
“Kenny? Do you know what time it is?”
“Yeah. Hey. I’m sorry, man. I’m actually downstairs. Can you let me in?”
“Wait. You’re here? In New York?”
“Yeah.”
“I’ll be right down.”
Kenny had waited ten minutes and almost called back, fearful his friend had fallen back asleep. Finally, he saw Justin exit the elevators in a black robe, rubbing his eyes. He made his way to the large glass doors and used his keycard to unlock them. He pushed open the door and looked at Kenny confused.
“Surprise?” Kenny shrugged.
“Get in.” Justin shook his head.
Kenny followed him to the elevators and rode up in silence to the top floor. The doors opened to a loft-style penthouse with exposed brick and modern finishes.
“Go to bed, Kenny. Explain in the morning.” Justin treaded slowly down the hallway to his bedroom, shutting the door behind him.
Kenny headed to one of the guest bedrooms and collapsed onto the bed. He was tired and fell asleep almost instantly with Cleo’s face running through his mind.
Now he was awake in another city, wondering what the hell he was thinking driving into the night to escape her. He heard a knock at the door and sat up in bed.
Justin opened the door, holding a hot cup of coffee.
“Hey.”
“Hey. Care to explain what’s going on?” Justin handed him the cup of coffee.
Kenny took it thankfully and took a long sip, closing his eyes and letting the warmth run down his throat. He could use ten more of these.
“Sorry for just showing up like that.”
“It’s fine. I’m just wondering what’s going on with you.”
“I had to get out of Boston for a little bit.”
“Why? Is it the team?”
“No, no.” Kenny shook his head.
“It’s that girl, isn’t it? The one from the café.”
“I blew it, man. She’ll probably never talk to me again.”
“I’m sure it’s not that bad.” Justin glanced at his watch. He was already dressed for work in a pressed navy suit.
“It’s all right if you need to go. Is it okay if I crash here for the night?”
“Stay as long as you’d like. I’m sorry to jet off like this in the midst of your woman trouble, but I have an important meeting.”
Kenny waved him off, taking another sip of coffee.
“Let’s go out tonight. Dinner and drinks. Get your mind off things,” said Justin.
