Her phone dinged. It was a text from Elle:
Oh my god. Cleo. Where are you?
Cleo: I’m leaving. I’ll explain later.
Elle: Are you okay?
Cleo: I will be. I’ll explain later. Can you finish cleaning up for me? I’ll come get everything tomorrow or something.
Elle: Okay. Of course. Please call me later.
Cleo: I will.
Cleo locked her phone and slid it into her bag. She heard a knock at the bathroom door and a surge of fear rushed through her. What if it was Kev? She didn’t say anything. There was another knock and someone twisted the doorknob.
“Who is it?” she called out weakly.
“Er. I just need to use the bathroom,” a woman called through the door.
Cleo felt a sigh of relief as she stood from the toilet and opened the door. A woman stood there looking at her curiously.
“Are you okay, dear?” The woman reached out her hand.
“I’m fine. Thank you.” Cleo pushed past her and looked left and right. There was no sign of Kev. She clutched her purse and walked away from the sounds of the party. She wandered around quietly on edge until she finally found a side door that led out to a patio. She opened the door and ran to her car, fumbled with the keys, and finally unlocked it. Once inside, Cleo slammed the door, quickly locking it.
She turned the ignition and put it into drive, peeling out of the driveway without looking back. As she drove home, she blinked back tears.
Chapter 22
Kenny
Kenny scooped up his last bite of cake with his fork and savored it on his tongue before swallowing it. He looked over at Justin, who was licking his fork clean.
“Told you she was good.” Kenny laughed.
“Better than good.” Justin licked his fork again. “I still can’t believe you made me go over there and get you a slice. I felt like I was in middle school again.”
“I know. I know.” Kenny felt embarrassed.
“She wasn’t even there. That cute assistant was, though.”
“I know. I don’t know what’s wrong with me.”
“I do. You’ve caught feelings.”
Kenny shook his head as he set his plate down at a nearby table.
“You’re really stubborn, you know that?” Justin continued.
“I know.”
“Like, she was right there.” Justin waved toward the dessert table.
“I know,” Kenny groaned.
“Where is she, anyway? She wouldn’t be hard to miss in that pink coat,” said Justin, looking around. The party was starting to wind down.
“I don’t know. I haven’t seen her in a while.”
