“He knows that you guys do that?”
I blush at the memory. “Not exactly. He knows that she is a vampire and that she and I are complicated, but that’s about it.”
“Oh, okay.”
I know he is scared, but he also needs to understand the implication of telling anyone else. Not only will her life be in danger, but mine and his too.
“You can’t tell anyone. Not yet.”
He looks at me before looking away. “This is complicated. I never thought…”
I can see the pained expression on his face. I know he is only a teenager, but someday I will have to tell him the truth about his brother and pack and hope that he will forgive me.
Right now, he is just a scared boy who saw the one creature he has been raised to fear—and rightfully so—face-to-face.
Then he had seen the same creature bite and feed on me.
He was terrified.
Another on the list of people I have disappointed and let down, but at least with him, I can try to make amends.
“I know what you thought. Remember when I explained that I was the protector…”
He nods.
“Well, my duty is to all supernatural creatures. Some vampires in the past really fucked up and alienated themselves from us, but Selene is not like them.”
“She feeds on blood, though…”
“So do we. We are wolves. It is in our nature, but we work not to hurt anyone. We work to live harmoniously with the others. That is why there are treaties in place, to help us live with others.”
“Even vampires?”
Now, we’re getting somewhere.
“Even vampires. Some people are bad, others are good. Some wolves are bad, others are good. And in the same regard, Emmett, some vampires are bad, and some are good. We cannot let the circumstances of how we came to be, or what is supposedly our nature, dictate what and who we are.”
He nods again.
When I reach to touch his shoulder, he doesn’t flinch. It’s a step.
Chapter 37
Selene
I’m shaking with adrenaline as I slide into the driver’s seat of my car, the taste of Liam still lingering on my lips. This isn’t how I expected tonight to go, but dang, that was exhilarating!
I stare at my reflection in the rearview mirror, noticing a brightness in my eyes that wasn’t there before. I feel happier and lighter as if a weight has been lifted.
I need to go home and figure out what tonight means. Part of me hopes Liam will come to see me soon like he said he would. I want to talk to him, to understand what’s happening between us.
As I drive through the quiet streets, my mind races with thoughts of Liam and the kiss we shared. I can still feel the warmth of his lips on mine, the way his touch sends shivers down my spine. I’ve never felt this way before, this alive.
But amidst the excitement, there’s also a twinge of uncertainty. What does this mean for us? What about his family? And what about my family and their secrets?
I pull into my driveway and sit for a moment, taking deep breaths to calm my racing heart. I need to be rational, to think things through before I make any decisions.
Inside, Annie is watching TV in the living room. She looks up as I enter, a curious expression on her face. “Hey, Selene, everything okay?” she asks concerned.
