“All I wanted was to talk to you. He started that shit.”

“No, I asked you to leave, and you wouldn’t, so Dylan stepped in. You should have left.”

There was a mixture of anger and frustration in his eyes. “Look, Maya. We should be together, I did it because I just needed some time.”

“Time!” My voice rose to near screaming levels as my anger began to surge out of control. “Time! You took my phone, pretended we were together, and then had Dylan brought up on charges—which you will be dropping, by the way. If you don’t everyone will know what kind of piece of shit you are.”

He strode across the room to stand in front of me, grasping my upper arms in his hands, his expression softened. “Let’s just talk about this. You’ll see I had the best intentions.”

“No.” Shaking my head, I placed my palms against his chest and shoved him backwards. “You wanted what you wanted and to hell with the cost or if it’s what I even wanted. You made your choice over a year ago and I’ve made mine.”

“Maya…”

“Leave Aaron. Leave and fix what you did, otherwise you’ll have larger problems than losing a girlfriend you tried to trick into taking you back.”

We stared at each other.

Finally, Aaron broke the stalemate. “Fine. Fuck you and this. I don’t need this aggravation or hassle; I can get a lot hotter women with a lot less trouble than I’ve had to go through with you.” Turning, he stormed across the room and grabbed his stuff off the hook by the door.

“Good luck with that!” I yelled after him. “Maybe next time con someone who you actually have a chance of being with.”

“To hell with you and this.” Grabbing onto the doorhandle, he yanked the door open and slammed it shut so hard behind him that the pictures mounted on the wall shook.

“Guess I’m not getting my phone back from him,” I grumbled to myself flopping back onto the sofa, mentally, emotionally, and physically spent from the encounter.

I was going back and forth in my head on whether last night went well or not. It seemed to have gone as good as could be expected. I hadn’t died of hypothermia, and all of my appendages were still attached so that was a big plus. But the biggest win of all was the fact she seemed to have gotten some of her memory back.

So then why hadn’t she called? Or come by? She knew where I was staying.

I’d been itching to go to her apartment today. It was all I could think about the entire day. But I refrained. She asked for some time and space and all I could do was sit back and give her what she requested of me. She already had one man in her life pressing her to bend to what he wanted, she didn’t need a second smothering her.

But by staying away I felt a little like I was drowning myself.

Dammit. The hotel room seemed small as I paced the room. If I kept it up, I’d end up wearing a hole in the carpet. I was going to go crazy waiting…

I had to see her. I needed to hold her in my arms and protect her from all the shit that the world threw at her.

Slipping my feet into my boots, I grabbed my jacket and threw it on. Making sure I had my card key and wallet on me, I pulled open the door and made a very girly, startled scream. Standing in front of me with her fist in the air poised to knock was Maya.

She gave me a slow up and down. “Going somewhere?”

“Umm.” Throwing my hands up in the air, I decided on admitting the truth. God knew she’d been lied to enough recently. “I was planning on going to your place, sneaking my way past Kevin, and knocking on your door. I know you asked for time, but I love you, and I didn’t want to leave anything to chance. I’ll do whatever I have to in order to get you back—even if it means violating a restraining order and going to jail just to see you.”

Tilting her head to the side, she eyed me. Finally, a hint of a grin spread across her lips. “You’d risk jail for me?” She gave me another slow up and down and then clucked her tongue off the roof of her mouth. “You’re kinda pretty. Not sure how well you’d fair if you were sent off to big boy jail.”

Chuckling, I shrugged. “I’m not sure if I should be insulted or consider that a compliment.”

She shrugged. “Take it how you will.” Thrusting her hands into her pockets, she rocked back onto her heels. “So are you going to invite me in, or…”
