“Of course you wouldn’t care, I’m guessing a little public indecency would be the least of your worries or what’s on your rap sheet.”
“Ouch. You really do enjoy hurting my feelings.” Judging from his teasing tone and mischievous gleam in his eyes, it was evident he wasn’t the least bit hurt.
The siren had stopped and as predicted the officers got out of the car leaving the lights going. Two men. As I sat up, I squinted to see who they were, but it wasn’t until they drew closer that I recognized them.
This was going to suck. I knew them both. Best case scenario in this situation was that they’d tease me relentlessly for the next few years and let us go on our merry little way.
“Don’t open your mouth. Let me take care of this.” Pushing myself up to my feet, I shot him a dirty look over my shoulder as he chuckled while following suit.
“Good evening, folks.” The taller one, Derek said. “Have you two been drinking or doing any type of drug this evening?”
“No.” Looking over my shoulder, I shot Dylan another look mouthing ‘shut up.’
“Could we see some identification?”
“Merry Christmas, Derek.” Of all the people to have found us, why did it have to be Derek? It might as well have been my ex himself considering Derek and my ex were best buddies all the way back to the police academy. He’d be on the phone with Aaron the moment he was back into the patrol car.
Derek’s step hesitated as he pulled his flashlight from his utility belt, flicked it on, and shined it directly into my face temporarily blinding me. I put my arm up to block the blaring light. Not so fun being on this side of it. “Maya?”
“Yeah, it’s Maya. Thanks for blinding me by the way.” The only good thing about this situation was that I wouldn’t have to worry about getting a ticket.
A roar of laughter erupted from Derek. “You know your place is just across the street.”
“No shit, Sherlock!” I scowled at him. “We got into a little snowball fight and one thing led to another.”
Derek looked past me to Dylan who’d gotten to his feet and was now standing at my side. “And who’s this? New man?”
“He’s part of my intimate encounters club. We decided the park at Christmas in the freezing cold was how it was going down this time. What does it matter?” I snapped, planting my hands on my hips. “Guess it would be too much to ask for you to keep this to yourself?”
Derek’s smile widened. I swear to God if it got any wider his face would split completely in two. “Most likely. If it makes you feel any better, I’ll just let you off with a warning.”
“That’s swell.” I looked at the officer next to him. I didn’t know the other guy very well, he was new. Chase, I think his name was. I had so much shit on Derek I could pull something from up my sleeve to guarantee his silence on this topic but chose against it. I wasn’t the kind of woman to play the blackmail games.
An awkward silence fell over us.
“Well, if that’s all, we should get inside, Maya. It’s getting cold out.” Dylan took my hand in his and led me forward.
“Have a good night, gentlemen,” I said as we passed by them.
“I have a feeling it won’t be half as good as your night,” Derek called after us.

Chapter 8
Dylan
“Friend of yours?” I teased as we entered the apartment building and began to shake the snow off our clothing and stomp the snow from our boots on the mats just inside the doorway.
“Friend of my ex’s, co-worker of mine. He’s okay, I guess. Guys stick together though. He’ll be on the phone texting my ex before we’re upstairs.”
The guard at the desk, it was Keith tonight, barely lifted his head from whatever he was doing on his cell phone when we walked past.
“That so?”
“Guarantee it.”
“Would your ex care?” Not that it mattered either way to me. Some dickhead cop ex-boyfriend wasn’t going to keep me from what I wanted. And right now, what I wanted was Maya. I just hoped the incident with her co-workers didn’t kill the fire that had been sparked between us in the park. I hoped she wasn’t reconsidering what could be a good thing.
